It's been 8 months since the last BG football game. I'm so excited and nervous about this upcoming year. I would read 3 pages on "Pink Railings" if you guys wrote about it.

Thank God for this site!

Go BG!

If the stadium collapses when it is empty does it make more noise than a normal game day crowd? Lets not wax poetic on the Doyt. It isn't pretty, it surely isn't a classic and it is rarely filled.

I am glad no one was hurt in the empty stadium. I am sad that someone actually rushed to take pictures of it. What dismays me more is that this is a hot topic on a probable top 25 team's board.

Let the cries of blasphemy begin.

Here's the deal. This is a very very newsworthy topic for a couple reasons. First of all, and I'm not prone to random bouts of hyperbole, if this would have happened on gameday it could have easily killed somebody. I know I know, if if if.

The problem now is, if we don't do anything about it, and God forbid it does happen again and kill or injure someone, we would be CRUCIFIED in the public eye. Just imagine the sportscenter lead for that Saturday night. Camera shots of crying co-eds, Interview with Krebs (who resigns along with half of the Athletic staff the following week). Criminal negligence cases followed by civil cases followed by the absolute gutting of our football program. For years when people hear Bowling Green, they don't think of Omar Jacobs or high-octane offenses, they think of tragedy. Something like this could cripple our entire athletic program for 10 years minimum. It's a lot of speculation, but the above scenario is not unreasonable.

Our AD office is filled with smart people who I'm sure have already talked about the above scenario. Because of this, they will no doubt be forced to do something to ensure the structural integrity of the Doyt. If I had to guess, I would say they will err on the side of caution. This means that a ton of money may now be dumped into they doyt. This money has to come from somewhere, whether it be insurance policies or funding meant for the Sebo Center. Seeing as how we already have funding issues, this could be a big snag as far as Sebo construction timelines go.

For these reasons, I'm surprised we don't have ten pages already. I am concerned as hell about this. I agree that the incident in a vaccuum means almost nothing. However, the ripples that this could potentially cause are a definite cause for concern.
I have to agree....this could have been a tragic situation and needs to be addressed. You make a lot of good points, J4H, on why this is so serious.

I love the Doyt....it needs work, everyone here knows that. As Flip pointed out, our beloved home sits out in the elements with nothing to protect it from those elements. It is almost 40 years old and needs work. I'm positive it will get the necessary work.

Thank God nobody was hurt...or worse!! A slab of concrete falling from that far up? I don't want to even think about it.

So - basically where we are now is that the 'decorative' concrete pieces will either be removed or reinforced, right? I imagine it won't cost too much. I just hope I live long enough to see the doyt refurbished.... (I am 31)

Well since it will probably be impossible to replace the 'decorative piece' with an exact replica to match the rest of the stadium, how about you just take down all the decorative pieces, take off the top of the stadium, and just add a second tier to the stadium, and then put on a new top and new decorative pieces. This way it will all match :lol:

That would be my guess.

Obviously, this was a crazy thing to have happen.

And it's clear they may want to kick the tires at the stadium to make sure it is still structurally sound.

But that falling concrete wouldn't seem to have much bearing on the basic integrity of the stadium. The pictures make that pretty clear.

Obviously you do not watch "This Old House" on WBGU or you would know how to make an exact replica of this decorative piece. It is rather simple, in fact, so simple I would say that even a TU engineering student SHOULD be able to replicate the piece.

Some of you have written about Sebo funds being diverted to Doyt repairs/improvements. Is it not the case that donations for Sebo are strictly for Sebo? Or, is your concern that the university will be less likely to start the Sebo project while still short on funds in the chance that they would have to foot the bill for a portion of Sebo down the road (in addition to those Doyt repairs/improvements)?

Actually they are going to move all our games to the Glass Bowl to prevent unforseen tragedy.

Of Bob and Karen Sebo's 4.4 million dollar donation, 3.5 million is ear-marked for the Sebo Center. Potentially, a small portion of the remaining $900,000 and other donations received could likely be used as the Athletic Department saw fit, whether it be for Sebo center-related affairs or for repairs of the Doyt. But yeah, your right, most of the money cannot be used for anything but the Sebo Center.

Actually the remaining $900,000 of the Sebo's donation is earmarked for three other non-athletic related areas. Some is going to the Entrepreneurship Program, some to the Sebo Jazz Scholarship that they set up through the College of Music several years ago, and I can't remember off-hand what the third area was. So, no, the only money going to the AD from this donation was specifically for the SAC.

Okay then, after further research...
Sebo Entrepreneurship Program = $750,000
Jazz Scholarship = $75,000
WBGU = $40,000

Total = $865,000

So yeah, only $35,000 that I could not account for. Not a whole lot left over, if it's left over at all to dedicate to general usage.

This sounds too much like Chicago and Wrigley Field when they had concrete falling and they were saying that games could be played at Comiskey Cellular field or whatever the heck its called these days.
