Hate to break it to you...there are cuts. atleast in the maggot section

I agree with you. Cuts should be made with a big regard to attitude b/c a bad attitude can ruin the section. Whereas technique can be improved alot easier, changing an attitude takes alot of work and ppl usually don't want to do it.

The maggots aren't the band...I'm talking in every section, not just the maggots.

Never said they were, but you said the band doesn't make cuts, so i provided an example that disproves your statement.
I know that the maggots aren't the band. They do have to throw in other sectionss to counter out coolness and popularity and all that jazz. :yawinkle:

Jason Cash was the Flash - and may still be.

One Halloween one of our snare drummers dressed up as The Flash. Jason was a Soph at the time, I believe. He was in all one color sweatsuit with a lightning bolt on his chest and wings hanging out of a sweat band or something. You would have to know him. Good humor and a great all around guy. Short and very skinny. Or was that skinny and very short. I forget.

I digress.

He then started running. EVERYWHERE. He would usually run around the block band right after stretches for whatever reason. He would run around when lining up for pregame. People would chant his name, "Flash! Flash! Flash!" Jay Jackson love it. The Grad Asses thought it funny. Chief was midly amused by it, but knew the value of great fun in the rank and file.

I grew tired of it, but that was because I was - and still am - a butthead.

So, the next time you see a perc with a goatee and the name "Flash" under his name, you will know his story......as best as my recollection can muster.

So, you're Little dummer who runs around after teapot started in either 90 or 91.

I just can't say it. I have literally THOUSANDS of come-backs for you, Delaine. I'm afraid I'm suffering from schema overload. I'll have to bow before I am the first mod to ever get banned.

Attitude DOES make or break a section. I'm not saying it was all good times in the euphonium section, but we were all mature enough to deal with a problem efficiently. Most of the time we even hugged it out! But that's just euph love. However....realmenskip, I'm not sure who you are...but I would like to make a suggestion, band-mate to band-mate. There has been a lot of talk about maggot-rebellion...and I would hate to see the section go down because of poor attitude and lack of respect. I really hope you all will try and work things out!

Here's a tradition for ya.... the reason the MUMB can't go to Athens, and the 110 can't come to Oxford....

The battle of the bands still burns
by Paul Shugar

The rivalry between the Miami band and the Ohio Marching 110 might be bigger than the rivalry between the two football teams.

The Ohio Marching 110 has been banned for 23 years from traveling to Miami football games. Likewise, the Miami marching band also has not made the trip to since 1978.

Miami marching band director David Schaffer vividly remembers the event. He was a graduate student on that fateful day when Ohio faced Miami and the bands' rivalry began.

On Oct. 15, 1977, the Marching 110 took the field like it would for any other game. Instruments blared and flags were held high, but the Miami flag flew upside down.

Schaffer said a riot almost broke out when the Miami crowd noticed the upside-down flag.

"The students started to boo and it turned into a contest between them and the band on who could be louder," he said. "Then, when they (the 110) exited the field, they marched right through the Miami band and performed a horn swing, striking a few members and requiring one to have to get stitches."

It was the last straw. Schaffer said Ohio fans had a reputation of throwing cans and beer bottles at the Miami band when the game was played in Athens. The flag incident prompted the outraged Miami administration to ban the Marching 110 from playing in Oxford. Additionally, Miami's band was not allowed to travel to Athens.

Of course the Marching 110 did not help the situation by storming through Miami's field, playing and taunting Redskin fans. The band also did not attend a post-game reception that the Miami band organized, Schaffer said.

Schaffer said each band had a reputation for hanging their rival team's flag upside down. Current Marching 110 member Nathan Gilcher said the Ohio band is often not welcome in many Mid-American Conference stadiums because of its reputation, which was built during the 1970s.

Schaffer said former Marching 110 director Ronald Socciarelli's behavior upset him throughout the incident.

"When we confronted him, I’ll never forget what he said," Schaffer said. "He said 'you have the rudest student body we have ever played for,' like it was our fault."

Schaffer said the Ohio Administration did not fire Socciarelli, but did force him to write an apology letter to Miami that was printed in the student newspaper. The apology did not move Miami administrators into changing their minds about the band.

Marching 110 Director Richard Suk said the band has tried to move forward and establish a connection to return to Miami.

"When something negative like that happens it gives the university a black eye," he said. "We used to have a picture of the upside down flag outside the marching band office when I first started here, but we took it down because it is nothing to be proud of."

Despite the ban on travel, the Marching 110 still found ways to mix it up with Miami before Suk took over as director in 1996. Suk said another incident occurred between the band and the Miami football team on Oct. 17, 1992 at Peden Stadium.

On homecoming weekend, the Marching 110 had their alumni band down to perform to take the place of the missing Miami band. The Miami Football team came out early to warm up while the Marching 110 was still playing, and an altercation ensued between the alumni band and the Redskin football players.

"The crowd started to boo the Miami players and the alumni members actually started tackling some of the football players and some little brawls broke out," Suk said. "Eventually the coaches called their team off the field to a cheering crowd thinking the band had chased off the team."

Gilcher, who watched films of the 1992 incident, said Miami players kicked a ball into the band while they were performing. When an alumni member picked up the ball, a scuffle occurred as Miami attempted to get the ball back.

Gilcher said the band knows about the incidents with Miami and other MAC schools that keep the band from traveling to most away games. He said that today’s band is different than the property-destroying, flag-turning Ohio bands from the past.

As for the Miami band returning to Peden or Ohio traveling to Oxford, Gilcher said he expects to see both bands traveling soon. But the Miami band will always be its rival, just like its football team is for Ohio, he said.

"The rivalry between the schools definitely has not diminished," he said. "We do not do anything different these days for the game, but we want to make sure we have a perfect show in front of them and their fans since they are our rivals."

And the maggots are allowed to cut because there are a limited number of instruments available. I know for a fact that... sometimes sections aren't allowed to make cuts based on attitude. (Was going to type out the whole story, but realized that would be... hmm... indiscreet.)

Just trying to point out that it's not the same thing.

110 wasn't allowed to play BG and BG never traveled to Athens. I don't even know the last time BG played at the Hemp on the Hocking.

I believe it was Chief that made the decision since he always had a great reputation with all the MAC schools sans OU (I believe the director rubbed him wrong - IMAGINE).
