No scholarship for Nick Lawrence

I suppose he could still be a walk-on given the timeframe of his "leaving for college" (August 5/6)

Although it isn't clear he's coming here. His family might have wanted him closer to home. Best of luck to Nick.

Nick's scholarship was withdrawn. He is no longer on the roster. It is unclear as to whether he plans to attend BG or attend school elsewhere. I would guess that he could try to walk-on down the road, and a big if here, IF he satisfies any and all of the coaches concerns about his conviction.

Nick Lawrence article
After some quick work on bgsu.edu I came accross this listing on the BGSUFalcons website (a player bio for Lawrence):

http://bgsufalcons.collegesports.com/sp ... ick00.html

Not on the posted roster, but neither is Rhett Magner who also has a "hidden" bio page like this one.

Also, a quick directory search of bgsu.edu shows a Nicholas M. Lawrence of Brighton, MI enrolled at BGSU. . . .

I see what he's getting at.

Read J.D.'s quote:

"He's not on our roster at this time, and he is not receiving an athletic scholarship in the fall," J.D. Campbell, assistant athletic director for communications at BGSU, confirmed Wednesday.

Notice what J.D. did not say:

"Nick will not play here."

"Nick will not receive an athletic scholarship here."

I'd guess DD is right. Nick probably does plan to attend Bowling Green.

Maybe, if Nick walks the absolute straight and narrow this fall, coaches are leaving open the possibility of offering him a scholarship later.

I don't have a problem with that.

I mean, considering the charges, I'd make him pee in a cup weekly. But that's between Brandon and Nick. I trust Brandon judgment on this, pretty much.

I was impressed with the way Nick handled himself in the paper. He assumed a whole lot of responsibility for what happened. Granted, his mom is the mayor -- probably has a sense for what people want to hear. But, still, it was impressive.

I too hope the kid gets his life turned around. However, I'm not impressed with him taking responsibility. What else could he do? He was caught red-handed dealing drugs multiple times. Taking responsibility for one's transgressions is what one should do and doing so doesn't make one deserving of praise.

This is the kind of kid who could help BG alot. A kid who under other circumstances would have went to a bigger school but who we nab because of problems. A Randy Moss kid.

I just want to point out that all you BG purists would have been all over Marshall and Toledo for having a kid like this go to their school.

agreed but this wasn't the case with Lawrence. He was signed up before his incident or more accurately, before he was caught. He's a good player but not a 5 or 4-star guy that's going to change our fortunes by himself a la Randy Moss.

And by the by, if it were up to me, I would allow the kid to enroll here but never come within 100 yards of the football team. I would never get on UT for letting a kid like this go to their school, but I would if they let him on the team. I hope we don't let him on ours. He wasn't just caught with dope in his car or something like that -- he was dealing. Unacceptable.

Hopefully he'll learn from the consequences.

I agree with the later part of your statement. Your chronology is off on the first part however.

Anyone else catch that his mom is the mayor. Now that must have been a little embarassing.

"I'm glad I was caught," said Lawrence, son of Brighton Mayor Kate Lawrence. "I'm glad it was now. I hope I serve as an example ... (that) if you involve yourself with drugs you will lose in the end. "

This is the same thing I heard from another guy that I know that got caught dealing by the police. He did it once, then did it again, realized the money was great so kept doing it...then, he realized it wasn't a great life because you always had to watch your back. I'm sure this kid was rolling in the dough and didn't want to stop for that reason. Money is the root of all evil. I'm guessing this kid will never deal again, but I've been wrong before. Although the money is great, I mean real great, those who are drug dealers generally seem to not like the lifestyle. Everything is a secret and people are always after you.

I kind of recall that he tested negaitve for steriods and the other drugs back in June when this story broke. He was supposedly a dealer and not a user. If that is in fact the case, then in all likelihood he is legitmate in terms of athletic prowess.
