Jacobs4Heisman.com v. 2.0

Post by NWLB »

Thanks first to XtotheZ and DayonsDen for their contributions. XtotheZ provided the frontpage graphic, Dayon his excellent banners.

More is coming, don't consider the site a finished work, since it will be growing and improving weekly throughout the season. Indeed I'll be working on it yet this weekend.

The flock of Falcons working on it has grown as well, more are welcome, even if you don't know exactly what for. PM me and I'll sign you up for the email list we are running for coordination, if you see something that peaks your interest, you could jump in at that point.

I considered flaming pink, but it reminds people of the gradkowski fan site.

Try it now, tell me what you think.

Bear in mind that stats page is going away about the time the season starts, sooner if I get other information to include. Of course if anybody is fancy with the tables and stats type of thing, I'll post about anything anybody comes up with which is better than what I've go up there.

Just a few things I don't like from a design standpoint:

1. I don't like how the front page "floats" in the middle of a white background (it looks doubly weird given that the "Bowling Green" banner at the top gets cut off). My suggestion would be to create a background that continues the design.

2. The blog has a set of links that pop up over top of the stories. You should probably move the links to across the top or something so they don't get in the way.

3. In every one of the pages that has the two Jacobs stat banners, the top banner is left aligned and the bottom banner is centered.

Those are the only things that really bothered me. Not a bad start. Omar should be proud.

Firefox and Netscape are displaying it alright, which makes sense. Opera isn't showing the menu at all. And the blog isn't displaying right in Explorer at all, which is odd unless they found new ways of screwing with anything Google ownes.

CSS isn't my bag just yet, but I keep thinking it is rooted in these two lines:
div#mainClm{float:right;width:66%;padding:30px 7% 10px 3%;border-left:dotted 1px #E0AD12;}
div#sideBar{margin:20px 0px 0px 1em;padding:0px;text-align:left;}

While this works in Firefox, I'm curious if the mainClm floating means that the IE error has it stacking the main column on top of the sidebar.

Is anybody else having the same issues using IE?

The frontpage graphic is the same as that shown in the previous thread about the site, I pushed it into Fireworks and sliced it up for yet another program. Not state of the art, but its a start.

The top banner used to be to the side of the title text, I like it more with smaller text above it. I had the second banner centered to avoid too much zig-zagging from the top to the body to the footer.

**ON edit....

I shifted to a horizontal menu for now, which seems to display alright. I'll tweak the spacing shortly. I can't duplicate the display errors in any of the other blogs I run, it might just be a posting error of Blogger itself.

Just off-the-cuff impressions...

I agree with the background idea. The graphic that was created should be centered and put on a brown background. I don't know how Fireworks works with slicing stuff up or whatever, maybe I'll dig into that CSS for ya later, if work stays slow.

Also, (and something I have limited knowledge of), I'd make the white space an IFRAME, and have all links from the top open up into the white space. It keeps consistency, which is huge. Instead of the links list in the sidebar for all pages, I'd make it a page within itself, linked off the top navbar. Same for the banners, then. DD's work is awesome, and deserves a spot on an "extras" page, a collection of banners, backgrounds, avatars, etc for download. Maybe touch up the font selection a bit, but other than that, just shoot for consistency.

Brown background is a go.

I agree on the extras page, but didn't want to detract from DD's own photobucket page.

I'm plowing through book after book on the software I have, CSS, PHP, etc. But I'm very sure none of that will come fully to bear on this project before its stuff for the archive. I'm trying to catch-up on about five years of inactivity in this kind of thing.

I figure the menus and other things will get replaced with something much nicer, but I wanted to get rid of the static lists of links as soon as I could.

I'll link J5s site at some point.

One of the thoughts I floated on the sites email list was to change the frontpage graphics each week of the season. So if others are interested in creating their own spin on it, have at it.

I'd hope to have most all of that worked out by the time I start work on Antirocket.com in a couple of months.

About the site, the way it looks, and the direction it appears to be going in...

Let me just say that everyone can procreate, but that doesn't mean everyone should. Hopefully you understand my analogy.

you should probably use the arial/helvetica font on the front....also having the text justified will make it look alot better within the specified box. when it comes to changing the top every week, I would be willing to come up with the graphic that gets replaced so that it coinsides with the rest of the design.
