No Harris in Browns Preseason Game?

Post by BG_Kiwi »

From www.clevelandbrowns.com comes the following news regarding tonight's preseason game against the Giants:

"Crennel said Doug Johnson will be the first quarterback to replace Trent Dilfer; rookie Charlie Frye will probably play in the second half."

My guess is that next game he'll give Josh some reps...but overall that isn't good news for Josh. Seems like he's going to have make an amazing impression to even possibly be considered 3rd on the depth chart.

it says 'frye will probably play in the second half.' so that doesnt mean that frye is gonna get the whole second half to himself, he just might play in it. i dont think this means that harris wont get any playing time at all, but the fact that his name was not mentioned does probably mean that he wont be playing much.

Quarterback derby to commence
Four Browns players compete for backup job tonight against Giants

Charlie Frye, hoping to win the Browns’ backup quarterback job, has been inconsistent but shown flashes of promise in camp.

BEREA, Ohio — Four quarterbacks. Two roster spots.

The math is simple.

So expect to see the beginning of a heated competition among reserve quarterbacks Doug Johnson, Charlie Frye, Josh Harris and Lang Campbell when the Cleveland Browns host the New York Giants at 8 tonight in the debut of first-year coach Romeo Crennel.

Starting quarterback Trent Dilfer will play just one quarter. After that, the quarterback derby begins.

"This league is just like that," said Harris, a Westerville native. "You have to basically stock as many guys as you can and let them fight it out and see if you can get the best team available."

The Browns’ story line is similar to many roster battles at backup quarterback.

Johnson is a seven-year veteran who has won games in the NFL. He was signed as a free agent for insurance in case Dilfer is injured.

Frye, a thirdround pick from Akron, has been inconsistentin training camp but shown flashes of promise and is considered the quarterback of the future.

Harris, a former Bowling Green standout, has been in the league for one year but has yet to take an NFL snap. He likely will have to stand out in the exhibition games to beat out Johnson and Frye.

Campbell, a rookie free agent, is a long shot to make the team. With a solid game, he could qualify for the practice squad or hope to latch on with another team.

Crennel has his rotation set: Johnson will enter the game in the second quarter; Frye will play the third; and Harris and Campbell will split the fourth.

"I don’t expect anything," Johnson said. "I’ve been around this league too long to expect anything. Whatever the situation is, I’ll make the best of it."

Frye added that it doesn’t matter who the backup this early in the preseason.

"That up for coach Crennel to decide, who’s going to be the No. 2 guy," Frye said. "I’m just going to be prepared that, if something would happen, that I put myself in the best situation to go out and play."

Tonight’s preseason game will be the first of four that will sort out an unstable depth chart.

In addition to the quarterbacks, running back, safety and punter are other positions that the coaching staff will have to decide on before the start of the regular season.

"I’m anxious because it’s the first game, and these guys haven’t played a game yet," Crennel said. "We have to find out who will rise to the occasion because when you’re under the lights and the fans are in the stands and you’re playing in a game, some guys turn it up a notch. Some guys are not able to turn it up a notch."

No Harris yet 4:38 left in 4th quarter. Johnson led the Browns to a TD, but it was mostly running game and some Giants penalties...he made one good throw.

josh is in the browns game

Post by BGFalcons232 »

less than 10 minutes to go, tied at 14. josh just had a nice 11 yard scramble for a first down.

other than that, he hasn't completed a pass and was roughed on a play.

Josh is in now, and I'm afraid he may not be an NFL QB.

Some really bad accuracy issues.

He almost threw an INT on his second attempt. Had a very nice run, but hasn't completed a pass yet...victim of a drop here.

he has sounded pretty bad

Post by BGFalcons232 »

he hasn't sounded like he's doing too hot right now. other than that run, it doesn't sound like he's done anything special.

He's got happy feet. He needs to just settle down and go through his reads.

I'm afraid he may be pressing himself and can't relax.

He looked VERY uneasy out there...he cannot afford to do that in the preseason games. These are his chance to make the team.

Lang Campbell in. Harris got pulled after one VERY bad series.

He really better impress in practice and play well in the next preseason game, or his career is going to be shortlived in Cleveland.

unfortunately

i've been to a couple of practices and he hasn't looked very good in practice either. honestly, i don't like his chances to make the big squad. however, he would still be worth a shot to get through to the practice squad.

Harris nearly had a passing TD, but the receiver (Alston?) dropped the pass.

True, that was an acceptable pass...but it came a couple throws after he threw what should've been an INT, but the defensive player dropped it. I figure those two cancel one another out, and equal a BAD outing for a guy trying to make the team. I'm still rooting for him, but the fact is the rookie Charlie Frye looks way more poised, and much better than Harris right now :(
