Good post. One can be disgusted by PC, as am I, and still understand the problem with certain mascots. And I doubt that anybody is taking the nuts from PETA seriously.
Here's another distinction to consider. The Chief Wahoo caricature and the team name "Redskins" are clearly demeaning. Should those usages be considered in the same light as when Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, or Illinois name themselves after specific tribes in their regions and portray those tribes with dignified images? Can the use of "Chippewas" be an acknowledgement and reminder of an important part of our history?[/quote]
Clearly there are distinctions to be made between and among those schools and pro teams that use Native American names/mascots. I agree with Chief Wahoo and Redskins being among the worst (Savages is terrible too).
The guys who dress up like Cheif Illiniwek and try to imitate his dances make a mockery of something very sacred to the Illini. So, I can understand being bothered by that. Also, I was watching "Quite Frankly" and one of the ladies on the show (granted, I think she went a bit overboard at times) told of some other events at UIUC's campus that weren't too Native American friendly. Granted, people are free to act as racist or ignorant as they please in private, but not with the support of state and federally funded institutions.
I take PETA seriously regarding "Gamecocks". Figthing these "cocks" is illegal in 48 states and it is a dispicable act. Also, the So. Carolina logo includes a damn razor (or "spur") on the rooster's leg. It really is an absurd mascot and logo.

I now live in one of those 2 other states. A judge very astutely ruled just yesterday that chickens only have 2 legs. KY law only says that people can't fight animals with 4 legs. Hence cockfighting is legal, even though the judge found it dispicable and disgusting (I think this opens the door for three legged dog fightingBGSU-Ph.D. wrote:

Though that said, as a research scientist who uses animals, I pretty much take anything PETA says and throw it out the window.

Well, knowing that you research on animals might lead some to pretty much take anything you say and throw it out the window.PGY Tiercel wrote:I now live in one of those 2 other states. Yeah, but the difference between PGY and PETA is that PGY doesn't totally blow monkey balls.BGSU-Ph.D. wrote:Well, knowing that you research on animals might lead some to pretty much take anything you say and throw it out the window.PGY Tiercel wrote:I now live in one of those 2 other states. There is a big difference between caring for animals and being a politically maniacal nutjob. Guess where PETA stands?

Yeah, he just *sorta* blows monkey balls. Lightly and around the edges, mostly.
PETA can rot in hell... and take the ACLU with them.

I'm not interested in debating this here for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that I can't imagine how debating with someone who uses phrases like "totally blow monkey balls" and "politically maniacal nutjub" would be fruitful.Bleeding Orange wrote:Yeah, but the difference between PGY and PETA is that PGY doesn't totally blow monkey balls.BGSU-Ph.D. wrote:Well, knowing that you research on animals might lead some to pretty much take anything you say and throw it out the window.PGY Tiercel wrote:I now live in one of those 2 other states. Regardless, this isn't the best medium for such debates.

PGY, it was meant to be a compliment. Please don't take it any other way. I can't really imagine you anywhere near monkey balls.PGY Tiercel wrote:Thanks for the "complement" BO  Actually I avoid monkey balls all together, too many diseases and shots needed. And PhD, please know that my word choice was intentional. I possess much more education than you obviously think. When speaking of people who lack common sense and logic, I tend to speak their language for effect.

Yeah, if you don't like my opinion on PETA just say so. People have a right to disagree. Name calling is childish and you should be ashamed. I didn't call you pathetic. I was referring to your post. You were name calling (see "maniacal nutjob"), not I.
Childish? I wasn't using phrases like "totally blow monkey balls."
What did I post that was childish?
