Women's BB verbal

Post by brewer »

Here is an article in today's Newark Advocate about BG's latest recruit. Together with Laura Bugher that should pretty much wrap up next year's class, barring any early defections.

NC's Clapper commits to BGSU basketball
Two-sport star ready to lead Green Wave to volleyball title

Newark Catholic standout Sarah Clapper has no problem playing basketball and volleyball.

When she gets the chance to play just one sport, however, it might be scary.

Clapper verbally committed to play basketball for Bowling Green of the Mid-American Conference this month. Clapper, who is entering her senior season at Newark Catholic, has been a star on both the volleyball and basketball courts for the past three seasons.

While she is currently helping the Green Wave gear up for their state title defense in volleyball, she said picking basketball wasn't a hard choice.

"Now I don't have that college decision looming over my head," Clapper said. "I have that figured out and I don't have to worry about it until basketball season. Now I can go out and play volleyball and have fun and try to win another state title."

Clapper, a 6-0 forward, averaged 14.5 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game for the Green Wave's girls basketball team last season. She also scored the game-winning basket in NC's district final victory against Worthington Christian.

Several MAC schools, including Kent State, Ohio, Miami and Toledo recruited Clapper, but the small forward has her heart set on Bowling Green. The Falcons won their first MAC title since 1994 last season.

The Green Wave star saw the Falcons in action last season. Clapper took her second visit to Bowling Green with her father, Chris, last week. Now she is ready to sign a letter-of-intent in November.

"I think my first impressions with their coaches were great," Clapper said. "I clicked with their personalities and their style of play, and it's the easiest transition to the type of ball we play at Newark Catholic.

"Their tradition is rich, and it's also kind of like what we have at Newark Catholic."

Before she does that, NC girls basketball coach Matt Schmelzer is hoping Clapper can help the Green Wave to another banner season.

"I'm really excited to have (Clapper) back," Schmelzer said. "She'll be experienced, as will the rest of the team. We should be pretty good."

For her part, Clapper said she is already thinking about what she needs to do to succeed at the next level. She'll be able to do that by playing just one sport.

"Next year when I focus on basketball I think I'll see my biggest improvement jump," she said. "When I settle down and focus on one sport, I'll see where my true limits are and how far my potential can take me."

This is a great addition for the team. The type of fundamentally sound basketball played in east central Ohio is just what we need. and, we shouldn't have to worry about her getting homesick and leaving before school starts next year. It's a great time to be a women's hoops fan!

I would LOVE to post this in the "Hoops" forum, but past experience dictates that they players must have something hanging between their legs before basketball can be discussed there.

She was being recruited by Big 10 teams and had her sights on going to Illinois. She backed down from that and decided she wanted to go to a "smaller" school where she would get more pt and try to be the "star".

My mom actually works with her mom. I guess she is very very good. I won't be surprised if the BG volleyball team tries to get her to play. She goes to Newark Catholic right now and they have a rich tradition with their volleyball program.

From what I hear we won't be dissapointed.
