A HS football question...
Here's the deal...
While reading through my Sporting News CFB preview magazine I noticed in the top 200 HS prospects section that two players from Salpointe Catholic (which is about 2 mi. from my house) has two players listed. I drive by their stadium (very nice!) everyday going to campus. The players are: John Romero (6-5, 280, OL) and Andrew Berryhill (6-4, 240, DE).
What I'm wondering is if you guys (and gals) think it might be worth it to go and check out a game or two two this season. I've never been a very big HS football fan (largely because my stupid knees kept me from playing), but I don't think I've ever heard of a school, even St. Eds and Ignatious in Cleveland, that have two kids of this caliber so close to me.
Would I just be the creepy guy in the stands if I were to go, or might it be worth my while -- especailly if I were wearing nothing but BG stuff... 8)

First of all, schools boast two top 200 players every once in a while. Schools like Cleveland Glenville now seem to have 10 or 11 of the best 100 players in Ohio. Every Cleveland public school kid w/ a little talent is transferring into that district.
Second of all, GO TO THE GAMES!! As a high school coach, I love to see the stands full. A lot of times, the people you sit by will be friendly (atleast where I'm from). Before I was coaching I'd go to HS games on my own. College football is great, but the atmosphere when it comes to rivalries between towns or neighboring districts in high school sports can be amazing. I'd say that you pick out a game every week and attend it if you're not doing anything. It'll start your weekend of football off on a good note.

I try to make a game or two of my old high schools. Usually good games and cheap too. There's always going to be other people there that just want to check out football game so you shouldn't feel like the creepy guy(despite wearing BG gear, sorry I had to get that one in there) unless you're just like sitting there staring at the cheerleaders I wouldn't worry.
Landstown high school in Virginia has two of the top WR's in the country (the top 2 according to Tom Lemming, but no one really gives a sh!t about Lemming's rankings--he's such a hater) and they played Granby in a scrimmage on either friday or saturday, Grandby also has a 5 star WR, and the two 5 stars got in a fight. Evidently, the field wasn't big enough for all of them.

I watched the state finals last year in all divisions, and believe me, none of those teams would win games in the MAC. Don't get me wrong, I was completely overwhelmed with the talent level of the teams, primarily Colerain, but they didn't have 70 studs like colleges do. College athletes are the best of the best. Their lines wouldn't match up first of all, ans second of all, young men at the age of 21 or 22 are more mature than boys at the age of 17 or 18. That is a big gap, especially since the college players devote the entire year to get better at their sport (with specialized attention most of the year).MACMAN wrote:Dude...you live in center of the midwests youth HS football you realy need to go to see those kids, and St. Iggy and make the trip to see the MAssilon Canton game....you dont knwo what your missing...some of the aforementioned schools would be competitive in the MAC....no cht....
Definately, for anyone on here, get out to some HS games. I may be bragging my team up every now and then (depends on how we do). Ohio is one of the best states for HS sports, not just football, but Ohio football is simply amazing!!

It is no joke...I would pick Massilon, canton Mckinley , cinci molar,or Iggy over the likes of a Buffaloe, OU, Temple ...even eastern....
These schools teams are that good...good enough to push around the listed schools, and esp Div II.
You really need to spend a friday night in Paul Brown stadium with 18000
+ fans watching HS football...I go home to watch when ever i can get over.
It is great football.

you're right. it is great football. great high school football. i would argue that there's no better place in ohio to see some fun, competitive football than in stark county, in some truly great atmospheres.MACMAN wrote:It is no joke...I would pick Massilon, canton Mckinley , cinci molar,or Iggy over the likes of a Buffaloe, OU, Temple ...even eastern....

that being said, there's a huge talent gap between the high school and college ranks, at any division.
have you seen massillon the past two years? year to year, they are, at best, the third of fourth best team in stark county. stark county. not ohio. stark county. mck is hot and cold of late, although right now, they can be classified as being pretty hot. moeller and ignatius are consistently good, but, not as good as any college team. not even an naia div. 2 school.
your statement is assinine, and i wonder if you have ever actually watch any high school or college football.
Cincinnati Foosball
Cincinnati is known for some good teams. There is a couple huge football showcases coming up for the next couple of weekends.

If you are in the area I highly recommend you go. Tickets are fairly priced ($11) and you get to see every game (5 or 6 games). I am a GCL grad myself and now that I am graduated from BG I can go and check out these events this fall.
One of my good friends coaches at Covington Catholic (who is ranked #2 in Kentucky). They are playing Cincinnati Moeller in Paul Brown Stadium (Cincinnati, not Massillon). We both are Cincinnati LaSalle grads.

MACMAN - Just take a look at the size of the lines. High school boys can't compete with five guys across the front that weigh in the vacinity of 300 lbs. Most HS Def. Tackles at the bigger schools go about 240 or 250 (obviously you'll have your bigger ones) and the ones that are bigger aren't that strong yet. High School offensive lines average about 260 or so, not 300. There is a strength difference up front, there is a speed difference in the backfields. There may be a few guys that feel they're better than committing to a MAC school (which in my case is stupid now a days, go where you feel comfortable), but the upperclassmen at these MAC schools are just as good if not better. I love HS football as much as the next guy, but I am not stupid enough to think a HS team can beat a Div. I college team. If you think the MAC is that bad, please don't call yourself the "MACMAN."

For calling yourself the MACMAN you do not know anything about the MAC. You are way off. Buffalo would beat any high school team in the US by 80 points and they would not even have to try. Ignatious is a great football school no doubt, I grew up around there I know. If they were even close to what you were saying they would have 25 seniors graduating every year with the capability of playing division 1-a football and starting immediately. High school football is not even close to 1-a football. Your arguement is absurd. The difference between high school and division 1-a football cannot even be compared. It makes me mad just to read that someone thinks a high school team could beat a MAC team. ESPECIALLY a mac fan.MACMAN wrote:It is no joke...I would pick Massilon, canton Mckinley , cinci molar,or Iggy over the likes of a Buffaloe, OU, Temple ...even eastern....

HS football
You should totally go. Ohio High School Football is some of the best around. When you get a chance to see players of a high caliber, it makes it even better. Good Cleveland teams to watch, as most have mentioned are Iggy, Ed's, Benedictine, Mentor, Avon Lake, Chardon to name a few. The environment is awesome, and it gives you another outlet for you football fix.
