Though we suffered some blowouts today 48-0, 51-0 :x We had some bad luck in losing some close ones to ISU and Illinois.

I'm sorry, but I'm not buying the "luck" thing.

The MAC is downright terrible this year. Not just "Not holding their own" they are losing everything. We are still winless OOC against 1A opponents. That is more than just luck. Many of these games have been total blowouts as well.

The MAC SUCKS this year.

I agree. Last year we had three teams that were legitimately deserving of a top 25 ranking. This year, I don't believe we have even one.

I think we have a better than decent chance. Look how high Miami got last year, only losing to Iowa.

If we only lose to Oklahoma, a much better team than Iowa, we should theoretically be ranked similarly.

Possibly two teams

You know, I don't think that we can discount the Falcons as a legit team, because we played well with a new quarterback against what I think is the best team in the country at this point. And I know that Marshall is 0-3, but dangit it, they have lost by a total of 13 points to two top 10 teams. I don't think it's fair to discount them as a team that is to be taken lightly. There loss to Troy doesn't look as bad after Troy beat Mizzou also. But as for the rest of the MAC, I think that it is pretty much aweful. Miami is a team that has experience and could play pretty well, and NIU with the return of Haldi could still be dangerous. But as far as early OOC, I agree with everyone else, it's HORRIBLE!! But hey, here comes MAC play, and let's see how it plays out. It could be worse, thank god we're not the Sun Belt, where almost EVERY team is a walkover week in and week out.

If we run the table and win our bowl game we should be ranked by the end of the season.

If we do that, I could see us above 20 in the rankings. All these MAC teams with losses is actually kind of scaring me though. Sure we can beat them all but usually teams with no wins come out one week and shock everyone. I'm hoping they aren't saving that shock for BG.

The bottom 9 teams of the MAC sucked last year and sucked the same amount this year too. The difference is the performance and talent level of the top 5. Marshall wasn't bad the last two weeks, but didn't get a W to show for it. Miami has not been very good, especially getting waxed by UC. BG has looked the best of all, but we'll find out Friday night for sure. NIU played Maryland tough, but then lost to a mediocre Iowa St. team. UT's defense couldn't stop a lot of high school teams. Too many great players graduated or went to the NFL and they haven't been replaced with anywhere near the same level of talent. Omar being a very notable exception.

If there is a silver lining, it is that the MAC has yet to lose to a I-AA team.

Seems like our league drops one of those games every year.

The MAC has six nonconference games left:

-- Eastern Illinois at Eastern Michigan
-- Temple at Toledo
-- Idaho at Eastern Michigan
-- Bowling Green at Temple
-- Ohio at Kentucky
-- Buffalo at Connecticut

It is difficult for me to imagnie Bowling Green losing at Temple... but this season would have been difficult to imagine, period.

Strange year.

You are right, the teams at the bottom of the conference sucked last year, but did they suck this bad? Akron is downright awful. If charlie Frye is so good, why can't the Zips find the EZ. In his first two games he put up good stats and did not find the EZ, but yesterday he was just as bad as his teammates, maybe worse. Ball St. isn't far behind them. They got drilled by Purdue and back that up with a blowout loss yesterday. Right now I put Buffalo ahead of these teams. At least Buffalo doesn't get shutout. These teams were bad last year, but not this bad.
Last year we were saved by having BG, Marshall, Toledo, NIU, and Miami all knock off some notable teams by close margins. This year those close games are not going the MAC's way. And there has been less close games anyway. Toledo sucks, Miami has there head up their asses, Marshall could be 3-0 with a different schedule or break here or there (still not too much pain seeing them 0-3), NIU has two tough losses to show, and we have played the Sooners as close as anyone yet. But in the end all of these games are losses and that is all anyone remembers. Right now Marshall looks like the best team in the east despite their record. I'm sure they are going be hungary to leave the MAC on top too. My bias says BG is the favorite to win the west, but we only have our first game to judge that. NIU has been thrown in the fire three times already this year. All three games being decided in the fourth quarter. They will be ready. I think friday will determine who walks away with the west. The rest of the west is so crappy that they are all going trade losses with each other.

A couple quick points.

First, can we not admit that last year was an extraordinary year--as in not normal--and that we as a league are not ready to produce those kind of teams every year? Maybe we didn't turn the corner, maybe we just found it.

Second, much as I despite them, the Rockets should not be counted out. In the only measure that matters, they are 1-0.

To me they have not proven a thing yet. They have given up more than 500 yards in all three of their games, and giving up 500 yards to EMU is not pretty.
