I have to disagree with you on this specific point. We can make a correlation from the primate world, where "chest-beating" is used as a display to communicate to outlying silverbacks that they will be confronted if they attempt to enter a troop already controlled by a silverback. In much the same way gorillas use chest-beating, humans use it to signal others and not as a signal to oneself. It is not used as motivation to be tough. I can think of many other more appropriate approaches to motivate oneself. When a player makes a play on the ball and does the chest-beat afterwards, he is doing it in a similar manner to our primate friends and that is to draw attention to the signaler so that ALL signal receivers know who the man/silverback is. I believe very strongly that it's done to show-up the opponent.

This is an NCAA rule I actually agree with.

I agree with transfer.

I like how BG celebrates when they score a TD and you rarely see the refs go to our players and warn them. Scoring is exciting...have fun but get over to the sidelines in a timely manner. The way our WR's chest bump is ok...nothing bad.

Ya know who had the best TD celebration? Kurt Gerling. Kurt would score, quickly find the nearest ref and hand him the ball. Then he would run back to the bench....like he never scored. I loved that.

One of the reasons I don't want to watch the pros is all the "Look at me" attention most of these prima donnas crave. You scored at TD...you did not eliminate world hunger.

Watching the pros aren't that bad, you just have to know who to watch. My personal favorites were Walter Payton, Barry Sanders and Jerry Rice.

i like TD celebrations, yea some of them are a little much, but for the most part i think they should be allowed to do whatever they want

The MAC is adopting these rules. The UT coaching staff had a MAC official come in and explain all the new rules to them. As a result, UT has been practicing how they celebrate after a TD. UT has been practicing this for about a week now. In fact, the Blade picked up on this at our practice on Saturday and talked to Coach Amstutz and put a story out this morning about it.

I remember from the late 80's to mid 90's it seeemd that every University of Miami football player who ever made a great play took off his helmet in the middle of the field to draw attention to themselves. This was quickly squashed by the NCAA. No taking off of the helmet. I'm pretty sure the NFL has this rule too, though somehow Brett Favre got away with it in the Super Bowl one year.
