That's the thing-- you can't put 18 defenders in the game. You only get two subs total for the entire game including ejections and injuries. The games is also 90 minutes, so it is quite the feat of endurance to go the entire game. The biggiest problem with soccer is that it is almost impossible to watch on TV without widescreen.

Got three kids (11, 9, and 7). None of them play soccer. They do play football, basketball, baseball, softball, bowling. They are not wussie, geeky kids. That is why they play real sports and not soccer.

No soccer for Noah. Catie? Time will tell. I have to say that soccer is about the only sport I didn't cover while at BG and I don't feel like I missed a thing (and they were pretty good at the time). The game just doesn't appeal to me.

So I exaggerated a little to make my point that they don't even attempt to play offense once they get the lead.

I just can't get into soccer. I've tried, but I just can't get excited about the games -- probably because I've never played seriously so I don't know all the little intricacies and nuances that make up the sport. It's fun to play and I enjoyed playing intramural soccer, but watching it is is pretty unbearable for me. It's like hockey without the fun. If BG scored a first period goal and then iced the puck every possession for the rest of the game, and played on a rink that was 200 yards long, what do you think would happen to our attendance numbers?

And shouldn't this be in the "futbol" forum instead of the football forum?

Sorry, man, but soccer sucks. It's the world's most popular sport, because most of the world cannot afford to play anything else. You can play soccer with just owning a ball, and you can make up a couple goals, and play for a combined total of about $10. Its the only game that 90% of the world can afford, so of course its their favorite.

These guys have pretty much listed all the reasons why its a terrible sport, so I'll let them stand on their own. They basically all boil down to the fact that its plain ol' BORING.
edit: The real reason this town sucks is because I have to drive to Toledo to get some damn White Castle. :x
Definitely. BG needs a White Castle.

As the resident collegiate soccer player I feel I must chime in.

First of all I am a fan of SPORTS. If it is competative I'll watch it. There is drama and excitement in every sport and that is what intrigues me. I can't say volleyball is awesome but when I go and watch a game I find myself gettting sucked in. One team has a better setter or a person who can serve top notch and you see who can do what with the ball. I also don't enjoy tennis too terribly much but I'll be darned if every year when Wimbledon roles around I get very interested in the drama and excitement of grass tennis. And with tennis the women's game is more interesting to me , short skirts aside, because the women actually play and have volleys rather than just hte power game. Another thing about being a fan of SPORTS is actually being there in person. I think if I took a group of you who HATE soccer to a big premiership match in England or a World Cup match featuring your United States you would have a different opinion.

Common knocks on soccer rebutted by myself:

It's stupid they just kick the ball and run around:
So simple, put the ball in the back of the net. No illegal procedure, holding, mysterious penalties in the backfield- if htere is an infraction or foul 9 times our of 10 you can actually pick it out from the play. Don't knock a sport because of how universal and easy it is to understand.

Boring, they don't score enough!
Common soccer scores are 2-1 or 3-0 in football rules that would equate to 14-7, or 21-0. Before our M.A.C. blew up to be the new W.A.C. our football scores were similar. You can't tell me there isn't drama in watching a close game with build up and anticipation. Our hockey fans on this board should be able to back me up on this one.

As to that build up and anticipation- you really have to work for a goal and a well executed play is a thing of beauty. It is almost orgasmic with the build up then finally putting hte ball in the back of the net.

Bunch of sissies running around pretending to be hurt:
Right. Soccer is the one where you wear a helmet and 15 lbs. of padding. Oh wait thats right you wear basically no padding, get kicked, elbowed in the ribs and face and are expected to play the whole 90 minutes. No timeouts. No stop after each individual play to huddle up and discuss what we need to do next. If you are deeemed a "faker" pretending ot be hurt or taking a dive you can actually get yourself a Yellow Card. Soccer refs don't take stuff from the players. The team I used to work for just finished there season missing a pair of players one with a punctured orbital- eye socket and the other with a broken jaw.

To finish I am not saying you all should join me for the next BGSU soccer match or even watch YOUR country compete for the World Cup. I am simply saying that if you are truly a fan of Sport and SPORTS in general you should be able to watch the occassional match and not think damn is this the end of the world! The same is true for those who like men's basketball but don't find anythign interesting with women's hoops- if you didn't find that NCAA Tourney Game last year interesting you might not have pulse. .

For the record I have no issue with soccer, it is a great sport. i have issue with how it is being presented and misrepresented.

The misrepresentation of soccer:
1. taht soccer is a low impact sport...fact children who begin playing soccer at age 8 and play for 6 years or more have the probability of 73% of sustaining serious injury, more sprains, concussions (why many eastern teams now require helmets to age 15) and acl tears.
therefore destroying the image that soccer is some how a "safe sport"

The presentation
I understand that kids like what they like, but kids needs diversity and when a sport is offered season in an season out they are geting very limited exposure...this is good for soccer in that the colleges will be getting more advaned players, but as in any sport as you go up a level there are fewer spots available to players.
I would urge that BG drop its spring program...and the NLL and institute LAX in its place, or at the very least in addition to.

youth football...ie popwarner is the safest youth sport in the country, and when youths are evenly matched by weight, injuries are extremly rare. Why is there no youth football in BG...nay sayers I guess would be the issue, to many kids playing other sports that over lap....I challange that by saying its because football is not an option, make it a choice and see what happens. then there are those who say well there are the equipment costs...to that i compair hockey nuff said.
We are talking about a youth football season, and giving kids a chance to say...hey I would like to try that, and taking those kids who take pleasure in football, educating them on the game, and providing more advanced players for our HS team and even hopefully launching some off to colleges...if it fails it fails, but not offer it just is not right...esp when a city builds a comunity center....that is dare I say focused on Basket Ball...when for kids in town there has been no shortage of place to play basketball.

And while I do know there is a flag football program...that is a very different game than tackle football while they very similiar in apearance, flag fotball requires very difernet skill developments than tackel, esp for linemen.

Well I have to admit that when I was thinking soccer and kids I was thinking more about 5-7 years old. Once your kids are around 10 or 11 I would think you don't need to put them in something like soccer to get rid of their energy.

You may have problems as a father and person in general if you think soccer is just for wussie and geeky kids and won't let you kids play it. Now my kids are too young still for that kind of stuff and I would love for them to play basketball, baseball, football, and so forth and I am not into watching soccer myself at all. However, if my kids want to play soccer I am not going to tell them that soccer is for wussies and they can't do it. Especially if we are talking about my daughters since I would rather see them play something more like soccer or volleyball and be cheerleaders. If my son never wants to play football and play soccer instead I will let him and I will love him. I will not think he is a wussy or geeky kid because he plays soccer.

By the way, do you think guys that play soccer professionally are wussy and geeky? I don't really watch them play, but I hear it can get pretty physical at times.

My wife played soccer in High School. She's a tough little monkey.

My daughter can play soccer, basketball or bocce ball if she wants to if it will keep her from becoming one of those zombie kids that space out in front of a TV all afternoon
