Some Scheduling Issues
Some Scheduling Issues
On another thread, I said that a big win against Wisconsin could positively affect future scheduling for BG. I know many fans would disagree, but let me spell out my thinking.
Once a team reaches a certain point where its reputation as a solid program on a national scale is established, I think it opens some scheduling doors. A loss to you is not regarded as an embarrassment. Other nationally respected programs may be more willing to play you, even at your place.
Now, I'm not saying that BG has reached that level of respect or that it is even close. But for sure, BG is getting closer. Three or four more years of real success and the program may be there.
Look at some of the comments of Wisconsin fans. A significant number do not have a ho-hum attitude towards the upcoming game, are not regarding BG as a cupcake, do not see the game as merely a warmup for the Big 10 season. You can see that a good many of them respect the BG program, are really looking forward to this game, they want to see Omar, etc.
These are signs that BG is moving towards establishing a level of national respect. And what we want to show Wisconsin fans (and the national TV audience) is that we don't have merely a handful of very good players, we have a very good team.
Another plus for BG when it comes to scheduling is that many teams, e.g. Big 10 and Big East teams, like to recruit in Ohio. This is one reason stated by Wisconsin as to why they signed up for the game against BG in Cleveland, They don't play Ohio St. that year and want to keep their recruiting ties in Ohio open. Teams like Minnesota, Northwestern, Indiana, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Syracuse recruit Ohio hard.
So, and now I'm returning to the initial point, I think a big win against Wisconsin might help in future scheduling, especially if BG has continued solid success in the coming years.

I am in total agreement that our current success will lead to getting better teams willing to play in Doyt Perry. However, I think we need to maintain this momentum for about 10 years for that to happen. Each successful year is another step up on the ladder. I do not think we will see the fruit of our labor for another 5-6 years. Now busting the BCS could move that timetable up a year or two but overall this a another step forward in the process.

You don't need luck to maintain this success. Success breeds success and the program is at a crossroads. Just like Coach Brandon said yesterday at the Doyt, "BGSU can either take off from where we are or taper off and fall back". Almost every school in the MAC is spending more $$$ on their programs these days. We must keep moving forward.BGSU Falconz wrote:Unfortunately, I don't think we'll have the luck to maintain our success for 10 years. It's the Journey... wrote:I am in total agreement that our current success will lead to getting better teams willing to play in Doyt Perry. In BGSU's position as a mid major, it takes a lot of luck landing the right recruits. Especially landing the right recruits 10 consecutive years in a row.Falconfreak90 wrote:You don't need luck to maintain this success. Success breeds success and the program is at a crossroads. One thing I will say is that this growth in our program is no fluke. We have more depth in our program than we ever have, and we also happen to have one of the best AD's in the country (who just happens to be an alum) and one of the "greatest offensive minds in the country" (according to ESPN, Sporting News or one of those pubs.) in Stud (who also just happens to be an alum).
There is a reason Paul Krebs has chosen to stick around his alma mater...

We've had a solid program for a few years several times in BG history, and every time we slipped back into mediocrity. Nothing at this point suggests history will not repeat itself again.
I really really want to be wrong on this. I'm just not entirely convinced we can keep this up for a decade.

You could say that about any college in America. Sure the BCS boys get the majority of gems but the tide is slowing changing with the 85 schollie limit. When a recruit sees BGSU or another "mid major" on ESPN 4-6 times, he starts to think. There are only 2500 1-A schollies a year...and tons of HS talent out there.
And I think our staff has done an outstanding job recruiting. THere are no sure bets anyway.

Well, I will also say this: Why would either Texas or Ohio A&M want to schedule one another? They both know that they will be playing a tough game and either could very easily lose. The reason is because it is prestigious playing quality teams and if a program wants to make a run at a national championship (like both Texas and OSU do), you schedule quality opponents. Right now we are in a bit of a grey area - we are very good, but our track record at that level is only three or four years long at this point. Give it another 1-3 years of playing at this level and you will see our schedule starting to be filled by BCS schools who want quality OOC games.orangeandbrown wrote:I guess I have to disagree. The better we get, the less likely teams are to want to play us...especially on the road. With our home record now, who wants to come play us outside our conference?

Of course, I still can't figure out why a good number of folks have to have the "when's the other shoe gonna drop" mentality with anything and everything involved with this program. Enjoy the ride. If it ends in 5 days, 5 years or never, it's an outstanding trip, and I know that *I* don't want to lessen this experience worrying about what ifs down the road!!
