Word has it, Wisconsin's Calhoun has been nasty!

My friend is a Wisconsin grad and he was telling me there is a lot of buzz around Madison about their new starting tailback Brian Calhoun. Calhoun transferred from Colorado and is slated to be the starter this year. My friend said he's been tearing up in practice and is a real game-breaker, both running and catching the ball out of the backfield. The Badgers have had their share of productive TBs, and Calhoun sounds like he's going to fit the mold.

I guess one of my worries heading into this game is that Wisconsin will just run the ball down our throat like Northern Illinois did last season. We couldn't stop NIU last year all game with the run, especially the second half. It felt like we were playing 8 or 9 guys to their 11. Garrett Wolfe ran for over 200 yards against us - in the second half.

Against Wisconsin, we really need to get out ahead and build a lead on Wisconsin and make them play catch up. Because if Wisconsin is able to run the ball and eat up time off the clock, it won't be a good sign for BG. So let's hope we can go up there and score early and often.

I think Lovett will take care of the run defense and we'll be better this year.

I was encouraged when I heard a player say something to the effect that Lovett was focusing on details - making sure players were in the proper position - and fundamentals. I remember watching the NIU game and thinking a lot of players just flat-out forgot how to tackle.

Oh, I've heard the same thing about Calhoun. The Badgers will run the ball Saturday, no doubt.

Yes 1987...not only did it look like they had forgotten how to tackle, but they were also out of position a number of times. If I had a buck for each time one of our LB's overran a play against NIU or UT I'd be richer than Thurston Howell III

That game was a shining example of how NOT to defend the run. Either the LB or the DE has to have the backside containment. I don't know which of those guys had the responsibility on our defensive plays, but they lost that containment repeatedly. Everytime Wolfe would look for the initial hole, if it wasn't there he could be assured the cutback lane would be.

It was UGLY.

The most direct way for Wisconsin to win is to take their big line and Calhoun and control the ball and wear us down in the second half. Its the single thing we have to worry about.

Calhoun is a stud, i have been really scared ever since i saw that we was Wiscys RB, i'll never forget that game where Colorado beat Nebraska like 69-24 and Calhoun came in as a true frosh in the 2nd half and i believe put up better numbers than Purify or whoever their starter was! BG certainly doesnt have a good of D as the '02 blackshirts.. so i hope hes lost a step and i hope Omar goes insane on them as well

Sorry, but the Black Shirts have lost their luster. Is that the same 2002 team that let Iowa State post 36 on them???

Coach Lovett's arrival, IMO, is the most exciting aspect of the new season.
I am more than convinced our D will be very good in 2005....very good.

Two more words:

More depth

More math:

More depth = less damage.

It's still going to come down to their O keeping pace with ours, or their defensive ability to shut us down and then we will have to slog it out yard for yard against them. If it keeps raining I like our chances because that will negate their speed and we have proven that inclement weather does not halt the Studrawa armada

He sure is, 33. That kid is gonna be the best RB in the Big Ten this season. And we get to play him again next year? Great.

There was a big reason he ran so well....1/2 our D was on the ground most of the time due to the Wisky O line knocking them off their feet....and that FB Bernstein?

With everyone talking about OSU, MICH, Iowa and Purdue in the Big Ten, I'm interested in seeing how Wisky does.
