I'd like to see it this way. The new cb recruits are maybe alot more talented than that the vets we have now and are just out performing guys like Jelani or Mayberry or Nickolson. Mayberry at FS is kinda strange to me unless Coach is thinking of extra speed Mayberry might bring to that postion. Dozier and Perry are right at the kinda size you want a saftey positions. Heck most BCS schools will have guys in the 6'2 and 6'3 range at saftey. I'm surprised to see Ted Peipkow at MLB instead fo a OLB position. As of right now the changes look pretty good ,but we'll know for sure this Sat. at noon.Julius Erving wrote:A freshman starting corner? Ouch. If that is the best that can be put on the field, then Omar and Company better score 50 per game, because they may need it.
I'm less bullish on the Wisconsin game now. I had hoped that some of the vets would step up in the defensive backfield.

Yeah....
I know. We'll see if Jelani has gotten a clue over the past 9 months of practice and scrimmages. He is pretty good in NCAA Football '06 for some odd reason, probably cuz he's a senior.orangeandbrown wrote:Jelani is still starting.

I was at a practice last week, and watched Antonio Smith "chuck" one of our starting WR's, and knock him flat on the ground!!!! Coach Brandon made a BIG deal out of it, which was well deserved. From what I have seen, the starting spot is well deserved.
At the kickoff reception, Coach Brandon could barely contain his excitement for Antonio Smith and Bobby Thomas.
I guess this Smith kid is unbelievable...which is GREAT to hear!!
Let's see what the young in's can do.

Re: Depth chart changes
So Jonathan Culp has replaced John Lanning at Center. Culp must have really stepped up this camp. I can't wait to see what Ruiz can do. Another weapon in our arsenal!!Maureen_F wrote:A new depth chart was released today on page 16 of the Wisconsin release, which is on the BGSU web site.
The coaches shook some things up on defense. Freshman Antonio Smith is first at a cornerback position, with freshman Kenny Lewis backing him up. Terrill Mayberry has moved to free safety and Deaude Perry is first at strong safety.
On offense, there are two changes that were foreshadowed in the preseason. Ruben Ruiz is first team tight end and Jonathan Culp is first at center.
Several changes have been made at the backup positions.

Re: Depth chart changes
Coach Stud at the Radio Show at Frickers said that its taken Culp a while to get to 300lbs to the play the postion now. I guess that was his only shortcoming for a while. He also said that Drew Nystrom is very athletic and that the O-line this year is the most athletic that it's ever been.Falconfreak90 wrote:So Jonathan Culp has replaced John Lanning at Center. Ruiz is now the #1 TE with O'Drobinack backing up. We may see Ruiz split out wide at times to exploit mismatches. Ooooh nice!

Oh, let's use a MAC reference when possible, like Antonio Gates instead of Gonzalez.Redwingtom wrote:Wait til you see this guy play freak...he is going to be our secret weapon this year. Re: Yeah....
Some people really need to layoff Jelani Jordan. Breakout that gmac bowl tape. It is not him being burnt all over the field in the first half. Moslty it is players who have graduated. I'm so sick of Jordan being the ONLY one who takes the blame.falconboy wrote:I know. We'll see if Jelani has gotten a clue over the past 9 months of practice and scrimmages. I couldn't agree more K-Dog. He and Mayberry both did a darn good job against Memphis. I don't recall either one of them being the recepient of being burnt, but I do recall a safety getting his. Also, it takes more than just the secondary to stop the passing game. Even the line plays a roll in this. Gradkowski ran around with plenty of time to find someone to chuck it to. Eventually...somebody is going to be open, I don't care whose out there on that field. If I recall, the NIU and the Oklahoma game, the run killed us. Somehow folks seem to blame that on the corners too.
The defense is a unit of 11 guys and everyone needs to do their part. Heck, even the offense can impact the defense with field position and ball control. We win as a team and we lose as a team.
