Josh Will Play Tonight
Charlie has clearly done enough to warrant being the #2. They gave him the surprise start last night and he proceeded to go 12-14 for 186 yards. Charlie is doing exactly what I thought he'd do, and that is continue to learn the system and play well when given the opportunity.Goose wrote:I only tuned in for the last few minutes of the game, but the announcers seemed to hint around that Doug Johnson not playing at all could have meant something. If Charlie Frye has done enough to be the number two guy, it definitely bolsters Josh's chance of making the team.
I'm hoping that Charlie playing so well allows them to cut Johnson loose and retain Harris. I'd love to see both the MAC boys on the team, along with Cribbs
Did anyone else read this in the Pain Squealer?
Don't know what that means for Josh ...In fact, Doug Johnson did not even play, fueling speculation the Browns might keep only two quarterbacks when final roster cuts are made on Saturday.
"I don't know if I'd do that," Crennel said after the game. "I would be inclined to go with three."
Johnson played sparingly in only two preseason games.
"I expected to play until [coaches] told me before the game they wanted to play the young guys," Johnson said.

I was able to see the game and Josh started slowly. Hammb is right...he just seemed tentative out there. But he did have some real nice passes.
Johnson...how much did he sign for? Harris won't make more than $250,000. I think NFL Europe would be the best for J5...it sure helped Robert Redd, among others. But he has a family to think about.
Frye looks solid. I think the Browns should cut Johnson.

Yeah.....
I noticed too it took Josh a while to settle down a little bit and complete some decent passes. Of course he didn't have the luxury of having the 1st team O-line blocking for him so things can get scewed that way. At times the 3rd string O-line didn't give Josh much of a chance to do much. But its obvious he need serious reps with a 1st team offense to give him a chance. He just needs more reps and practice.

I don't think his patience is really the biggest problem. As others have alluded to, it is nearly impossible to make anything happen down the field when you are quarterbacking behind the third string line on a team with the worst depth in the NFL. I, for one, am thoroughly impressed with what Josh accomplished working under those conditions.dstubb wrote:I think he'd be fine if he wasn't so tentative. Needs to work on his patience in the pocket.
How BAD does Jeff Garcia look now, even compared to Josh? Glad Garcia is gone.
Browns fans that are getting down on Josh need to realize one thing -- it doesn't matter if you have Jesus Christ himself playing at quarterback. If your O-line sucks in the NFL, so does your team. Bottom line. Yes, the Browns 1st string may be able to protect the passer, but when 1st string players start getting hurt (and they will -- we are talking about the Browns), there is going to be no protection for any quarterback because there is no depth. The saddest thing is that the Browns' 3rd and 4th string O-line has gotten pushed around this preseason by 3rd and 4th string defenses - many times they have looked completely overmatched.
Imagine the uproar that would take place if the Browns put Cuckie Frye in with the 3rd or 4th string offense? He would struggle even more than Josh because he lacks Josh's mobility, and people would be screaming that the team isn't giving Charlie a fair shot with a decent unit. This is exactly what is happening to Josh right now, but he's not the "wonderboy," so, f*&k him.

Dude you're way off base. Charlie has played with the 3rd & 4th team OL & WRs all preseason. Charlie led the same guys Josh was playing with to game winning drives against NY & DET, and got a go ahead TD against CAR.
Charlie's outstanding play EARNED him a spot with the starters, but don't forget he started the preseason as the 4th stringer, and made things happen.
Clearly you haven't been watching the Browns' preseason...

I have been watching, and most of the time he has been in with at least the 2nd unit. In the second game he got some time with the third unit, but not much.hammb wrote:Dude you're way off base. I really don't think I'm off-base here.
