I went through this whole thread and only found one person that said they didn't have a good time. Were you going through other posts? Just don't see anything bad here except complaining about no standing up policy. I had a great time on State Street, the Hotel, pre-game and post game. Just disappointed we lost. I missed the terrace. When is it the best? I'll be back. THANKS

From my evaluation of this board I would say 90% had a GREAT TIME in Madison, myself included.
Much better than Ann Arbor gameday, similar to Iowa City gameday- Camp Randall and Kinnick offer great pregame fun mostly because the fans are so nice.
Considering there were 80,000 people plus and we were on the road, I’d say my experience was that we were treated pretty well overall. Although, there were several things I witnessed that were very shitty (excuse my language, but they were) included one incident that was complete unacceptable behavior and treatment by UW students that happened after the game. I’m not going to get into everything that occurred, but that later incident was UW student related. I’ll only say that as disappointed and upset I was after the game, it was all overshadowed by an incident after the game by UW students. The shame of the matter is, they basically spoiled what otherwise would have been an overall good experience for us.
You know, I didn't go to this game, but I must say that some of the Wisconsin fans' excuses for student behavior at games is pretty darn lame in my opinion.
The fact of the matter is that how students act in any situation reflects upon the institution that produced them - be it positively or negatively. Sure, there are norms across the country that we all expect from students, but when it comes to treating visiting fans like crap (whether they are drunk or not) and chanting obscenities at opposing teams or fans is unacceptable. The fact that alumni use the fact that they are students and this kind of behavior is in any way acceptable because of that fact, to me, is disgraceful for the institution. What it tells me is that UW-Madison has no institutional control over their students and how they represent their institution.
There are numerous things that or any university can do try and curb this type of behavior. A good example of this that hits close to home is Paul Krebs asking our marching band not to play that instrumental song (don't know the name) that students across the country have started inserting the phrase "you suck!" in. Another is Red Berenson up in Michigan taking the ice at the intermission of a hockey game pleading with students to stop being so vulgar during hockey games.
I think that most of the Wisconsin fans that have been around here before and after this game have been very nice and respectful. I just think that they need to bear in mind that it DOES matter how students act at sporting events. The fact that they are just students is not an excuse.

Just so everyone is on the same page, the song you're referring to is The Hey Song, --and yes, we've been forbidden to play it solely because it incites chanting of "you suck" toward opposing fans & teams.
And weren't they getting really strict about BG student behavior at basketball games last year, or am I remembering wrong?

Bleeding Orange if you WERE there you would have heard the student section yelling back and forth to each other.."eat sh$t, F##k you?" Sort of like we do BG-SU or the infamous OH-IO. They have no control over the student section. And they wanted OUR kids to sit down????????

Inexcusable. As much as I respect the Badger fans that have popped by AZZ, I have very, very little respect for their University as a whole after hearing stories like this. Absolutely inexcusable. There is no other way to put it.
And flicc, yes, they were. Paul Krebs is not only a great AD when it comes to athletics, but he truly, truly cares about the integrity of the Univesity as a whole. Few schools can claim to have that good of a relationship with their AD.
There were a lot of things that happened at BGSU that made me so very, very proud of that institution. The overall conduct of the student section at the UT basketball game (our huge comeback) without a doubt made me the proudest I have ever been of BGSU. Throughout that whole game our students cheered for our team and not against UT. It was a beautiful experience to behold.

they aren't allowing tuck foledo shirts at basketball games either. I watched Krebs' tall lanky puppet force kids to turn those inside out. The students got pretty pissed but I thought it was a good step.
Students can police themselves too. If it stops being the "cool" thing to do, drunken asses will stop doing it.

I believe you are referring to "Rock and Roll-Part II" by Gary Glitter.
Let's not condemn others though. I've been disappointed with BGSU fans at home events as well as away games. I remember the MAC Championship game against Miami and standing next to a young lady that made me think I was back on active duty as she knew more swear words than I did (I hope she doesn't kiss her momma with that mouth), And I remember telling one of our students to shut up and think about the next thing that was going to come out of his mouth as we were at the TU game last November (and this was BEFORE the third quarter).
Let's not condemn the Badger nation for some of their "fans" acting terrible when we have the same problem here.
I remember the Cameron Crazies got a warning from then Duke President Terry Sanford about their demeanor at home games and the next game they were fantastic. No chants of "BULLSHIT" but instead they chanted "Mr Referee, We Disagree!" There are ways to be classy and get your point across.

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second." ~~USCHO Poster "BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got." ~~USCHO Poster, AFTER Tech beat us #NeverGiveUp

But it won't change until someone in the administration decides to put a stop to it. Many of you know I support Krebs 110%, however this is an area he has ignored.
Two years ago at homecomming I was sitting up with my future in-laws watching the game. We had just witnessed the ushers send about 10 students packing because they brought some alcohol into the stands. Nothing wrong with asking them to leave. Not 5 minutes later a lady in her mid 40's (though she was trying to look 25!) plowed into one of these same ushers and dropped a plastic bottle of Bud Light. Not only did he not ask her to leave, he picked up the bottle and handed it back to her! Talk about a double standard.
Example 2: We build up the home opener, which we should. And the game comes and goes and everyone enjoys a BG win. The second game rolls around. This time in the second quarter the campus police come down and start threatening to toss the student section if they don't get off the metal bleachers. Again, there is nothing wrong with requiring student to keep their feet on the concrete. Standing on the metal bleachers is a liability. BUT, do it from the very beginning of the season. Have ushers at the student section reminding them of this policy change before they even get seated. Then toss them. Our policies need to be consistent from game to game and between students and general fans.
Example 3: The profanity at hockey and basketball games is terrible. We have games on TV and you cannot hear the commentators because the crowd is yelling bull$^&* over and over again. We have two of the most intimidating venues in the country even when they are not full. Perhaps one of the reasons we do not get more tv time is because networks don't want the fines associated with profanity being broadcast, aka Janet and Justine.
Anyway, the point is simple. The more our programs imporve, the more media exposure we get. The more media exposure, the more these things will be put out in the open. And none of these improvements cost additional money. We all know we can't have some of the things the department wants due to a lack of funds. But you would think we would have what we can get for free, and respectful fans are one of those.

Yep, the fans used to crush opponents without a single curse word.
By the way, we live in a glass house here, folks, so keep the stones out of your hands.
Once BG took the command of the GMAC Bowl, a number of "student-aged" fans near us took to yelling "Memphis, you s**k" and other similar witticisms at the top of their lungs. Similar things have happened at the home games we've attended the past two years.
