Thought this topic was about d-lineman? You guys went off and started talking about "skill" guys that switched offense to defense and vice versa. The only lineman that I can think of recently that switched sides of the ball was Andy Grubb. He played DT his first two years then switched to guard when he got too big. At least that is the reason that I recall was the explanation for the move.

Just for comparison, an Akron Zips article in today's paper listed the height and weight of 3 Frosh DL that will likely see PT at Purdue this weekend.
Every one of them is listed at 255 pounds....and 6'2" to 6'3".
Guess we aren't alone in our quest to get some beef up front.

There is a basic diference in how an offensive and defensive lineman thinks and reacts.
On offense you have a task to complete and a set of blocking proceedures (along with the other o-linemen) to make the play work.
On defense you also have schemes to carry out and holes to fill, but your basic goal is to disrupt the offensive plan. This is why you tend to see the crazies on defense. Your goal is crash the offense's party and trash it.
At the level we are trying to play at now these are not necessarily interchangable parts. Size and weight is not the determining factor - just think of the great defensive people over the years and you will understand my point. The offensive line is the brick wall and must be large and immovable, the defense can be smaller and normally is.
The great defensive players would never have worked on the offensive side of the ball - they enjoy the mahem that they create.

I think instead of "too big" let's go with "too slow". The key to this whole thing is being able to add bulk without losing effectiveness. That's the thing that the bigger schools seem to be able to do that we have trouble with. It could be a strength coach problem, or it could just be the big boys get higher quality big boys who are able to add the weight without losing speed.

They have a 300 pound nose tackle now. That is the difference.Falconfreak90 wrote:Just for comparison, an Akron Zips article in today's paper listed the height and weight of 3 Frosh DL that will likely see PT at Purdue this weekend.

Coach Brandon addressed this at the monday radio show. He admitted that the big, fast defensive guys are rare and tend to go to the top programs. He indicated that we will do our best to get them but....
Personally I cannot stop thinking that it is really sucks that Crosley and Leininger are no longer in the program. They would be in their prime right now. Oh Well!!!
So that you understand, I have Leiningers' Motor City Bowl jersey signed by the whole team and it haunts me - as I am certain it does Matt.

There has got be.....
1 or 2 guys off the OL recruits we have to move over to D-line. We have so many O-lineman now its silly. We can spare a couple I think. Yeah, I remember that bout Andy Grubb. I was befuddled about that move.
By the way, is Aaron Hillman still working with us? Thought this guy was the best or one of the best S&C Coaches out there. Was that all a joke or has has Hillman left and nobody noticed? :ugh:

The point is, as good as Thaler is now, if he could just add 10 more pounds, he'd be the perfect nose guard!!! Jeez, Freak, haven't you been paying attention!?!?Falconfreak90 wrote:Who is "they"? BG has a 290 lb NG in Thaler. Your point?

Matt was one of my fave players as well. I was told he has a year to get his stuff straight and will be back in 2006....since he never RS'ed. I hope that is still the case cuz when Leininger is in there he causes a ton of problems for the opponent.
I just keep praying for the guy that he gets everything back in order.
