Guys, a non-bias UT fan perspective here.

I really don't know why BG is not getting these games. Yes, you have Boise State coming in next season and you play Wisconsin in Cleveland as a home game.

Toledo hosts Kansas, Iowa State, Purdue, Fresno State, and Boise State in the next few years. Hope I didn't miss any.

The Navy deal with Toledo was a home and home, not a one game deal in Toledo. We played at Navy in 2000 and they came to Toledo in 2001. We had over 36K in attendance with tickets at $24 per ticket if I am not mistaken. Between ticket sales, concessions, and what Navy paid us to go there in 2000 we did just fine on the deal.

Now, you may have been talking about back in 1990 when Toledo did host Navy in a one game deal. I know that Nick Saban wanted that Navy game bad and it could be that we paid that much for it. I wouldn't pay that much for it myself, but then again neither would the current UT administration.

Someone said something about offering Michigan State.......well, Toledo offered a 3 for 1 with the 1 UT home game being at Ford Field and MSU turned us down. Good luck at getting MSU to play any top level MAC school.

Someone else mentioned the Glass Bowl is currently bigger than the Doyt. Not by much. The Glass Bowl officially seats 26,248 but we have brought in temporary bleachers on occasion.

Schade - the current MAC attendance record is 36,852 for game between Toledo and Northern Illinois in the Glass Bowl. The record before that was just over 36K for Navy at Toledo.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure that Wisky travels very well. Much better then your average Big Ten program. I wouldn't be surprised to see 20,000 wisky fans in Cleveland next year.

Not to flame or anything, but any takers that Wisconsin out draws us next year at Cleveland?

RF- I was refering to the Navy game in the early 90s- BG had a home and home in 91&92 and I guess I forgot it was Saban at the helm really wanting Navy. I do remember hearing we got Navy for a bargain bottom price where you guys weren't so lucky with the cost, I would assume because you highballed them and the bit right away.

You state you are not sure why BG isnt' getting the games. I'd respond with it financially doesn't make sense- we drew what 20K for Mizzou a couple years ago? I think our Southeast Missouri State game last year outdrew the Mizzou proper game! From a cost-marketing standpoint it shows that our fans don't care who we play whether it is a 1AA team or a mid-to bottom BCS team as in Mizzou or Pitt a few years earlier.

We are getting Boise State and as far as I am concenred we should continue this pattern. Like I said earlier why potentially lose money by bringing in Iowa State or Northwestern or Kansas when we stand to make as much money bringing in Eastern Kentucky?

People might couner "but recruits want to play big names" and "our fans deserve better" well I woudl say lets take care of that on the road like we have recently- playing at Oklahoma, winning at Kansas and Mizzou twice, playing at Wisconsin and making somewhat regular trips to Columbus.

But not just yet. Wait until the end of this season first to make a total prediction. But yes Wisky does have the ability to out draw us. I hope it doesn't happen. The revenge factor works in our favor this time I think.

That is one heck of an offer.
falconman wrote:...but I would never give Navy $500,000, I betcha if we offered Michigan State that, they would jump on that deal. I think that would be a reasonable business deal.
$500,000 to come to a MAC school? They can make $3 million+ staying at home AFTER paying the visiting team. Why take $500K from us?

I wouldn't take that bet.

I expect a healthy Badger crowd at Cleveland... maybe on the order of what Miami did for the MAC championship or something.

But 20,000? Wisconsin is a long way away, and it isn't like we are talking about a bowl game.

I think that's the wrong conclusion.

In 2000, the program was at rock bottom when we hosted Pittsburgh.

In 2002, we were still winning fans back -- and it rained.

I think a home game with Missouri would do better now.

I guess the conclusion I'd draw is that bringing in name teams is financially risker for us than it is for Toledo. That's all.

I think BG will have a great crowd. I agree that we need buses from campus to get our students there. But think of all the HS football programs in the Cleveland area. I think a good number of them might want to come out for the game.....and hopefully MOST of them would be for BG!

Boise State > Iowa State
I'd rather host a good team from a bad conference than an average team from a good conference

New Stadium

Post by tcochran »

I know it has been beaten to death, but we need a new stadium. Even if it is the size of OU's or similiar. There needs to be a new stadium that is enclosed and modern. "If you build it, he will come".

Lemme just get my checkbook

I agree that a new stadium would do wonders for the program. But the money just isn't there. Let's worry about getting the rest of the funding for the SEBO center before we start worrying about a new stadium.

I don't know about that, but I thought I'd just throw in something to think about. Wisconsin has ~340,000 alumni spread around the country. Part of the reason we "travel" so well is that a lot of the people who show up for those road games don't really have to travel at all. I'd expect a big UW crowd, but I wouldn't think we'd outdraw the home team for a non-conference opener.

stadium

Post by tcochran »

I know the money is not there, but that answers the question why big schools don't come. It holds us back in basketball and football. Hopefully the game in Cleveland is a success attendance wise so we can continue to use their stadium.
