I look for BGSU to begin doing the same type of thing. It is what many students want these days. If you don't improve housing you start loosing kids.

I'm pretty sure my cousin will be moving into the new apartment/dorm at Miami this year. He seems pretty excited about it and what they are offering. I like the set up they are providing as well. They aren't quite like dorms, but they aren't run by slum lords and under code. I agree with Journey in that many universities will start adding these type of living quarters. I probably would have considered living in a place like that had it been around when I was in school.

Don't get me wrong, I think they are very nice also... its an issue of cost here. I think Miami thought that their "market" would want upscale student housing on-campus and that they would pay through the nose for it.... however, the market has spoken and prices are dropping.
I think BG would do well to have some serious graduate student/married student housing of this quality.

They are VERY nice, and right by the Rec, New Goggin, and the new parking garage, and they aren't too far from the old WalMart, and Kroger.... New South Quad.
I hate that they are tearing buildings down again... When we lost Fisher Hall, we lost alot, when we lost the Old Van Voorhees(I think that is the Women's gymnasium's name, it stood across from Cook field, and by Bishop Woods, and across from Old Miami Field.) We loose our history, BG must have buildings suffering the same fate!
I'll chip in to have a new BG seal cast... but only if it is cast at Miami...

They are looking at demolishing the current CPA in favor of the knew HUGE "Super-CPA." I see no reason to demolish the CPA, just renovate and reuse, it is a nice looking building....
Anyways,Heritage Commons was supposed to cost 4000 a semester, and supposedly in the center was going to be gardens with a pool... doubt that'll happen.... I enjoyed swimming in the CPA Fountain...

Fisher Hall was replaced with its exact copy - Marcum Conference Center and Van Voorhees (which I was in and participated in a charette to save) was next to Roudebush facing the Delta Bells. It was in a Romanesque style and had been left to basically rot. It was used as art studios near the end, which was Summer of 1984. Talawanda Hall came down that same summer. Now there are two glorius parking lots in their places.MiamiBando wrote:They are VERY nice, and right by the Rec, New Goggin, and the new parking garage, and they aren't too far from the old WalMart, and Kroger.... Delta Bells? Where are those?
i get the old buildings confused, but Marcum is an EXACT copy? I thought Fisher was huge! Marcum is tiny... But we lost alot of nice halls... they are pushing to get ride of the parking lot, and putting Tuffy's back where it belongs...

Well after seeing many of Miami's students economic/social class, who wouldn't think that they might pay more. Just not well thought out, However I bet that they will fill up pretty quickly as prices drop, and if people really like it and tell their friends.Tech83 wrote:Don't get me wrong, I think they are very nice also... its an issue of cost here. I think many universities could do with some serious overhauls to grad/married housing. While BG has practically none (I don't think they have married, at least when I was there) UKs is pretty poor off. They supply decent ammenities, phone, internet, basic utilities, they have poor laundry facilities, no hook-ups in apartments, and are very small. To top it off, typicaly a 3 person family will only get a one bedroom apartment. Had UK had better facilities I probably would have considered living there.

Thats what I figured. I couldn't remeber if they had it back in the groovey 60s or 70s. Do they offer on-campus housing to grad students? I thought maybe they had some at founders but can't remember. UK does offer pretty decent graduate housing, if your single or married without kids. Can't really beat 400-500$ rent with no utility bills and ethernet hook-up.

Can't resist...... Married housing/co-ed dorm rooms.....When I was at BG, we always had that beginning of the year hall meeting with the RA. They would proceed to tell us that our dorm (Rodgers and Offenhauer) had 24 hour visitation, however, no female students were allowed to spend the night or sleep over..... of course all of us morons/lust dogs would respond "Don't worry, we will make sure she does not fall asleep."PGY Tiercel wrote:Thats what I figured. The University of Arizona has some very nice graduate housing called La Aldea. From what I am told it was originally a private structure but was sold to the University shortly after it was built. It's right next to campus and a parking garage. When I was looking at the UA I was told by just about every grad student I encountered not to live there because it was too expensive and the University was opening it up to undergrads this year due to low grad commitment.PGY Tiercel wrote:Thats what I figured. So, I looked online and found an apartment that was advertised as "close to campus" and ended up about six miles away. Also, this is what my monthly bill situation is:
Rent: $570 (furnished)
Cable/internet: $90
Electric: $75
------------------
Total: $745 (approximately)
All of a sudden after I got here, the $525/mo. at La Aldea started looking pretty damn good, especially since I make about $800/mo. as a GA. So, that only leaves about $50 for food/beer (the beer is the important part in grad school (medicine)). I tried getting out of my lease when I got here, but no dice. I would have had to pay about $3000 (which I obviously don't have.
So, bottom line, housing for grad/non-traditional students, I think, is extremely worthwhile. I would love to see BGSU build something like La Aldea, and something tells me that we will be, if only because of our strength in learning communities. BTW, its almost funny -- the UA is trying to put together some learning communities, but its almost like watching a toddler try to play Monopoly watching them do so.
The bottom, bottom line is - NEVER EVER, EVER GET AN APARTMENT ON-LINE!
