How, exactly, does red shirting work?

If a player misses most of the year with an injury the school can apply to get the year back. But if there were no injuries to the player, no matter how little he played, if he played at all he can't get the year back.
Thanks for your input Maureen. I was pretty sure that in football it is "one play and done" as far as redshirting goes.

But is it different for basketball? Or is it just if you get hurt early in the season? I was thinking in basketball that there was a small number of minutes that could be played without injury and yet still be redshirted. :?

UK Peregrine wrote:Most of the redshirting described thus far is medical/hardship redshirting. I think Freak was going for the non-competition redshirt. This redshirt is used to describe a student-athlete who does not participate in competition in a sport for an entire academic year. If you do not compete in a sport the entire academic year, you have not used a season of competition. For example, if you are a qualifier, and you attend a four-year college your freshman year, and you practice but do not compete against outside competition, you would still have the next four years to play four seasons of competition.

Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.

[joke] [/joke] and [sarcasm] [/sarcasm] is uneccessary when you use the  emoticon.

Plus if PGY doesn't post his thoughts on AZZ, then how else would he share his intellect and astute observations with anyone but myself. Now that would be a downright shame.  Image

Thanks Maureen.

Wow...one play and your RS is gone. That clears it up quite a bit.

Hey, I only had to post it because he's sitting here crying how no one listens to him and how everyone thinks some girl's (albeit a very smart and nice girl) answers are better then his. Plus we (Exitable tissues softball team, no we're not geeks  ) need his ego stoked for another decent night of pitching. Unlike the football team, were 1-0 right now. :P

Just as a show of good faith, I won't make the obvious "decent night of catching" joke here. Geeks.

You can redshirt any of your first 4 years . Jim played quite a lot and even started as a true freshman. Then they redshirted him his second year, and it was not a medical.

So Thomas' redshirt is already gone, then.

For this year...He could be redshirted next year...without medical reasons( unless He plays a snap)
