Hey Falcons! Looking forward to 9/21!

Post by BoyCBronk »

Well, here comes the week in which BGSU plays BSU on ESPN on Wednesday night.

After watching our first 2 games and reading up on your first 2 games, I really don't know what to expect on the Blue.

Boise State looked hapless in Athens GA, but decent in Corvallis, OR. However, our captain and pre-season hyped QB hasn't looked like the player he was last year. He's making some mental mistakes and his accuracy isn't what we expected from his performances last season. However, he threw no INTs @ Oregon State and was much more effective than against Georgia.

Fortunately for us, our inexperienced receivers are proving that athleticism and quick-learning can make up for inexperience. If Zabransky could only deliver the ball a little better, we'd be 1-1 instead of 0-2. Our running game looks solid and may be as good as our off-season expectations. Ian Johnson looked REALLY good against the Beavers, but didn't get as many touches as some of us might have liked. The nice thing is that he's only a RSFR.

Schouman, our returning TE, from whom we've been expecting big things, hasn't had any impact in either of the two games we've thus far played. If we can get him into the game, our offensive performance will change dramatically.

Our O-Line has been solid, considering we're starting 3 sophs and 1 frosh. We gave up a couple of sacks to OSU, but I think part of that blame comes from excellent Beaver coverage (what a strange phrase!) :) Our running game is decent, with 169 net vs UGa and 149 net vs OSU.

Defensively, our D-Line has played pretty darn solid. They held their own against UGa and did pretty well against OSU. Even with a 51-yd TD run up the middle in the 1st quarter, our D-Line only allowed 83 yds total rushing yards v OSU, and against big, bad SEC UGa only allowed 180 yds net.

Our Linebackers have been the strength of our defense over the past couple of years, and we've gotten stronger since the UGa debacle. Colt Brooks was back for the Beavers game and contributed mightily. Korey Hall is one of the harder-hitting LBs in the WAC and can make you see stars and spinning birds all at the same time. They have been one of the bigger reasons why we have a decent running defense.

Alas, we come to our greatest weakness--our DBs. They've kept our opposition out of the end zone like the levees have kept water out of New Orleans. Chalk it up to inexperience. While we've got a returning starter back there, Gerald Alexander hasn't been lighting up the city with his bright play. We've got some great speed and athleticism in our defensive backfield with Q Jones and O Scandrick, but they haven't shown the ability to defend very well. The good news is that Cam Hall, who was recently had 3 felony vehicular manslaughter charges dropped, is returning this week to active roster, and will likely start against BGSU. He's been practicing all summer and fall camps, so should be in pretty good shape.

From what I've been reading, BGSU is exceptionally strong in your passing game (our defensive weakness), and much less strong in your running game (our defensive strength).

Defensively, you've struggled a bit and may not be able to stop an offense that has it together. Unfortunately, I'm worried that we may not be able to put it together by 9/21. The good news for us Bronco fans, is that we've got 10 days to put it together. We've got the tools, but apparently, someone left the User's Manual in the shed.

I won't make a prediction, because I'm always wrong, and someone always calls me out.

I know that many Bronco fans on BroncoCountry.com are expecting a shoot-out, but I'm concerned that we won't have the horses (pun intended) to offensively keep up with you right now. If our defense can mature in the next 10 days and learn to make a stop or two, we might be able to keep up offensively.

Based on what I've seen so far, our best bet is to keep the ball on the ground and to control the clock. This is something that our fans are not used to seeing used in our favor--only against us--so I don't know how our fair-weather fan will appreciate this tactic.

One thing is for sure--we Bronco fans wish you all the best, especially those of you traveling to Boise! Good luck and hope for an injury-free game!

It is scary how much our teams are similar. Know this...our D needs to step up in a huge way after the first couple weeks.

That was a good analysis of Boise State.

This is shaping up to be an even more intriguing matchup than ever.

Believe it...the respect and fear is mutal for BSU! I have really enjoyed talking with all the Bronco fans the last few weeks. Very classy bunch!

Thanks for the kind words and an injury free game is always the best hope.

Good luck to you as well and we'll get it going in 9 days.

I allready conceded that your D is way better than ours. And the fact that you guys were able to run for 169yds on Georgia already spells bad things for us. We did piss poor job of running the ball vs Ball St with 140yds (yes , that is not good in my opinion). Especially if we are not completly healthy at our linebacker postions by the 21st , we are pretty much doomed. Georgia was a freak athletic team that is really good this year and you shouldn't be too upset at that loss. Sorry for the pessimamism fellow falcons , but I see know way we win at Boise. At least we get em at home next year.

I see nothing wron with you post, that is how you see it, and truthfully could tbe the deal.

I see us wining if we play like we did against WI,
I see us wining if the O plays as well as it did against WI and the D shows marked improvement.

I see us being humiliated if we play like we did against Ball.

Teh game will be what it will be. I am thinking we step up, but have no room for trash talk to the broncos.

With fans like you, who needs opponents. Why do you even have an Omar avatar. You obviously don't support him in what will be a very tough, but winnable game. After watching Georgia play SC I'm not giving them that much. Plus we'll see how good OSU is when they play louisville (who didn't look that good against UK either). We missed Pope at Ball state. That affects a lot of our running game.
I am looking forward to a great game against BSU. We may loose, I'm ok with that, won't change my life. But I'm definitely not going to be pessimistic about this game. I am going to believe this team can win. You know why, because our team deserves that. They don't deserve fans who constantly bitch and moan about how small they are and what not.

Pessimism is your middle name, falconboy, and it's getting really old really fast. I actually hate to see the letters f a l c o n in your handle because you exude so much cynisism.

Personally, I'm not all that worried about this game because I believe that we've put all the bad play behind us in these first two games. This is a good thing. Last year, after OK, we coasted until we hit Miami. Easy games don't show you what really needs to be worked on. These games did just that. The coaches will have them ready for Boise.

Finally,

others are sick of Falconboy too. Maybe it's time for this boy to find a new team, since he doesn't know how to be proud of this one.

I enjoy picking apart falconboy's posts as much as the next guy, but every yin needs its yang. I think we all have a certain concern about our defense, his is just a lot deeper and a lot closer to the surface.

yeah the pessimimasm (sic) is getting kind of old. You've made your points about why you think we've played poorly thus far. Let it go and move on. Support your team for god's sake. I'm getting tired of seeing replies like this attached to the end of every thread I read.

Seriously, Falconboy, will you just admit that you are a Toledo fan and head over to MACbbs? I'm so sick of your negativity.

Could special teams be the "X" factor in this game???

64-63 Final score because Brandon saw somebody go for 2 on the final play of the game and he thought "wow I got to get me one of those"

Uh...its not negitivity (well maybe a tad) as it is realistic expectations based on what I've seen so far. I'm NOT repeat NOT a closet rocket fan or any other such thing. My ultimate fantasy would be us going down to Boise and dropping 65 on em and sacking Zbransky 10 times and holding them to 3 points or less, but its not realistic. I can certianly be optomistic when its warranted. Gosh I was pretty optomistic before the season before I knew what kind of defense we really had. I actually thought we go undefeated was well within our grasp. Little did I know we wouldn't have a D to compliment our amazing and wonderfull offense. Lets just say if Boise beats us by 4 tds , I won't surprised. I'll be upset and really , really down , but not surprised. :-\

Well, what the heck does the team need to practice for? Falconboy has all the answers. The defense got pounded on by a VERY big Wisconsin team, so we should all follow his logic and just assume the defense will be the same for the rest of the season. I mean...who is Lovett anyway? Per Falconboy, there will not be any adjustments and every game will be the same. They will not learn from the mistakes and they will not get better as a unit. By this same logic, Wisconsin is identical to all the teams we face, so therefore, we will have all the same results.

What a joke, Falconboy. Let's just tell the guys to show up on gameday. Why try to get better?

I remember a UT team that got 63 points dumped on them in the first two games last year, but they seemed to hold our "potent" offense to zero pts. in the 3rd quarter that same year.

I wish Wisconsin was the only game we had as evidence of a defensive breakdown. But, how about Miaimi 2003, Toledo and NIU in 2004, Northwestern in Motor City Bowl (remember Herron running for 200+ on us?), Memphis in last year's bowl game before DeAngelo Williams gets hurt?

For whatever reason our defense has been able to rise to the ocassion against stronger opponents. It's what has kept us from a MAC title the last couple of years.

I'd love to say that "we won't see an offense like Wisconsin again," or "we have gotten our bad games out of the way early," but we all know we are only kidding ourselves.

We are going to have to fight and scratch for every win on our schedule this year.

Well, we do play Temple. So every game - 1.

seriously though, i think we'll blow out 3 or 4 teams before the last 2 games. I've been feeling better this week thinking about our defense. If we can see improvement from Lovett's boys every week I think they can be at least decent by the time we get to the really tough games (Miami, Toledo, Toledo/NIU, MCB).

And if our defense can get to decent from horrible, we will be very tough to hang with.
