That is heartbreaking. It is almost as though there needs to be stronger medical exams for athletes. When this happens to 15-year-olds though, it has to be tough to find what age they should start being tested for things. With many different exams for all types of problems, it'd be almost impossible to test all athletes from high school up but if it prevents things like this I would like to see it attempted atleast.
