The Real Deal

Its has taken me awhile to admit it but I am ready to say the Omar Jacobs is our first real superstar player to come out of BGSU. Don't get me wrong, I have known for some time that he is a very good college quarterback...if not a great one.

But something has held me back from believing he could be a top ten NFL pick and an immediate impact player at the next level. The whole "system quarterback" thing has been in the back of my mind. I even drink the "doing it against MAC defenses" kool aid sometimes. I guess its my MAC inferiority complex coming out?

But watching him throw the ball against Wisconsin has made me realize that he is the real deal. His accuracy is what makes him so special. He puts the ball right on the money almost everytime. He can zip the ball with arm strength when he needs to and he can put touch on the ball when its called for.

I still think he needs to work on his mobility a little and I know he will struggle at first as all rookies do with NFL defenses. But he has the size, the arm and the accuracy that you can't teach.

I hope all of us realize what a talent we are watching at our alma mater!

Until scotus give him a pass on his release I cant give him that passing grade yet.

I thought that too. Last Sat. was the first time I ever saw Vince Young play and the first pass he threw made me do a double take. Their throwing motions are nearly identical.

A good test of Omar, will be to see how he does lining up under center.

Josh Harris, another very good college QB, has a perfect release and throws a great looking ball. Trouble is he doesn't have control of where it is going all the time. We sasw Josh struggle at training camp this yar with his accuracy and with balls getting batted down at the line of scrimmage.

This is what sets Omar apart from Josh. Omar is 6'4" and can put the ball right where he wants to all the time. I don't care what your release looks like if you can deliver the ball at the right place at the right time. Bernie Kosar had these same qualities early in his career with the Browns and was pretty effective.

I don't care what it looks like either, I am just wondering what scouts will do to him after they watch a ton of film on him and work him out. I take superstar to mean 1st round pick. Lots of QBs get labeled with 1st round pick ability. Few stick with that the entire year.

You probably mean football superstar since this is in the football section, but I feel I must point out other BGSU superstars such as Orel Hershiser, Nate Thurmond, Rob Blake and Antonio Daniels. And I would say just wait and see on what happens with Nolan Reimold, he may end up being the biggest superstar of them all. I'm sure others with more extensive BG football knowledge than myself will be able to come up with a few more football stars as well. I just didn't want to overlook other BG alumni that came before Omar that had very successful professional careers.

Blake probably compares.

I mean, Nate was a bigger fish, but Blake is in the ballpark.

Ehhh, I don't think there is any probably about it. Rob is probably one of the most dominating defensemen ever to strap on skates.

Scott didn't graduate from BGSU. He grew up here and learned to skate here but didn't attend college here.

We also have two Hobey Baker award winners to our credit from the hockey team (that's akin to the Heisman for those that don't know). Both of which have enjoyed success in the pro ranks.
