UT had a an awful lot of inexperience on that defense, including multiple freshmen. We didn't have a lot of starters back (Thaler, Parks, Piepkow, Jordan, Arnold, Perry ... maybe we did, after all), but only one freshman (Smith).
I'm cautiously optimistic that our defense will steadily improve and answer the bell when it's rung against Miami and Toledo.

Different coordinator, different personnel, playing against different opponents.
In 2003, we lost to Miami and Big Ben. If I recall, Ben shredded every defense after the first game of the season and he continued that trend by shredding a few pro defenses also. Bruce also shredded quite a few defenses himself and is continuing that trend. Deangelo Williams ran wild on everyone, not just us. Northwestern (that was Jason Wright) who ran wild on everyone and is now in the NFL. Everyone that you have mentioned has shredded many opponents and are pro caliber players. There are some folks that can't be stopped. That would be like believing if you can't stop Omar, your defense sucks and I think we know Omar will make many good defenses look sick.

There is a difference. Omar and our spread offense is unique and it gives teams fits...even good defensive teams. We are having problems with teams that line-up and run it between the tackles and play a standard type of offense. Not being able to fill gaps, not being in the right spot, and then not making tackles is a completely different defensive problem than having trouble stopping a spread offense.

Agreed...but the teams that did this to us, did it to pratically everyone.
If Wisconsin runs over Iowa for 7 yards a carry, which they may, I'll agree with you. I see the point you're making and it's a valid one, I just think its rationalization to explain our bad defense. I think we'll get better, but right now, we're pretty bad irregardless of who we play.
We were actually much better against Ball State, except for the big plays. The big plays mostly happened due to inexperianced/younger players making correctable mistakes. Also, the turnovers left the defense in a jam quite a few times. Overall, the performance was much better than the score indicated. A 64 yard and 42 yard touchdown pass...both on a freshman; a 23 yard touchdown pass on first time DB; and a reverse that went for big yards set up another score. Of the 294 yards for BSU, more than half came on big plays. I know it's just Ball State, but the tackling looked better and we also got alot of pressure on the QB. This is definitely a step better than Wisky game. Hopefully, we make more strides in time for Boise game.
Some here fail to also think about is this. Its easier to stop teams defensivly who pass alot well, then those who run the ball really well. The reason is when you can run down someones throat, it eats up clock and keeps the high-powered offense off the field. Even when a run doesn't go for 10 yds the clock keeps going, so if your already ahead this works to your advantage big time. When a imcomplete pass is thrown it stops the clock every time, allowing the opponent more time when they get the ball to either come back or chew more up clock. This is roughly what happened at Wisky. Every time we had a 3 and out it only took like maybe 40 seconds or so and our weary and tired D was right back on the field again.
Now one of the main reasons I'm not at all optomistic about our chances at Boise is simply this, they ran for 160 yds against Georgia a very fast and athletic team. If they can do that vs Georgia I shudder to think what they casn do against us. Plus their at HOME with a 2 game losing streak. The are going to fired up as all get out for us. It all spells for another embarassing loss on national tv.
Just FYI ... Boise's DTs range from 6-2/255 to 6-1/293; their DEs go from 6-4/240 to 6-3/260.
I know , I saw the roster on their site earlier today. I'm guessing that their DT's are probably quite athletic and faster than what we've seen before outside Wisky for this year. Besides that 293lb DT is a starter and is probably very fast and quick. We could see a bunch of sacks on Omar early in this game with the Broncs being jackup to high heaven. Its interesting that the only sacks & major qb pressure we have to date of course came at Ball St from DE's Parks , Mack and Peipkow which is good. I can breathe a little when I see DT's Thaler and Cooley getting sacks or major hurries on the qb. We haven't had that from what I been able to gather. Cuz the it all starts with the interior lineman. Its those guys who disrupt and cause O-lines to double team allowing DE's and linebackers to come off the ends or the middle and speed rush the qb into bad throws , int's or sacks.

So D-linemen don't have to be 300 lbs to be effective? I'm confused.

It depends really. If the lineman is at least 285-295 and really quick with his feet and has aresenal of moves to get off blocks quickly than , yeah it can be done without necessaryly being 330lbs. But 330lb DT's is out of the question for us at this point now. We don't need a DT' that runs a 4.7 , they just arn't there. The bulk of the DT and NT help eat up blocks by the OG's and the Center and such allowing the linebackers and DE's do their job. Gosh we've covered this before. Think like this guys. 5 o-lineman vs 4 down defensive lineman. Your outmaned right there especially if the offense is using 1 or 2 TE's. So if if your giving up too much size and weight at DT positions and at linebacker too vs a front 7 basicly with 5 o-linman and 2 TE's , so when playing B10 teams your going to get creamed. Get it?
