OK, I've been mulling this for a bit and figured it would be good flame bait as we come up on a "bye" Saturday.

With the advent of the "permanent" 12-game schedule, reconsider the general disdain for I-AA opponents. Someone in Northwestern's administration said their strategy moving forward was something akin to this:

A I-AA opponent
A MAC (or other "mid-major" school, I suppose)
A top-flight opponent
A school that's, I forget the exact phrase, academically similar

So, following that model, our OOC strategy would be ...

 A I-AA opponent. Yes, I-AA is not I-A, but it's a home game and, in most cases, a win.
 A Top 25-type opponent, a la Ohio State, Oklahoma, Purdue. Good national exposure and we can't overlook the financial ramifications. This would be without reciprocation of a home game, as our I-AA game would obviously not have a return date.
 Mid-major one-for-one deals, a la FIU (or was it FAU ... anyway, F_U :P ), Boise State, Wyoming, etc.
 BCS teams with a return date - creatively like we've done with Wisconsin; hopefully others at the Doyt ... Kansas, Northwestern, Mizzou, etc. Other teams that I would look at Kentucky, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Iowa State, Wake Forest, Duke, etc. Cincy's a possibility, but they're locked into their rivalry with Miami and I doubt they have an appetite for two MAC schools in one year. Just a hunch.

OK, flamethrowers, have at it. 8)

I think we will have an almost impossible time convincing a BCS school to come to the Doyt. They have absolutely ZERO to gain from it. Ask Pitt who has now lost at OU and at Toledo. At best we will pull a Wisconsin...

Sounds pretty good to me '87. If most of the big schools are going to be scheduling 1-AAs so should we. It will get us another home game, which I would like. Plus I think the idea of playing two big10 teams is "scary" because a) more chances for big injuries 2) my wallet can't take it. Not that injuries can't happen against 1-AAs (ask the 5 UK players from this weekend), but I think it puts a lot of pressure on the team, that most other schools are doing. There are some nice things about getting a "guaranteed" win to help the record

we have also been invited to the big house and that game is the same year as our next trip to Ohio State...another big...big ten opener, I saw where the nols wanted us to come down there in 09 or 11..i will look for that list, and I saw where NIU is to play the Vols in two years.

I know for sure that we do play VT after seeing it on a VT website. So i do know that game and the OSU game are on for those years. The 2007 game that was posted vs. ASU is questionable. If you want to play a similar team to BG play Houston University or Texas Christian University. We could possibly get them to play at the Doyt. A team like memphis would be a possiblity for a potential home and home series. Think C-USA!

BG's first recruiting priority should be to get Ohio players to choose BG instead of Big Ten and Big East schools.
Yes, this is obvious, but even BIG TEN schools go out of state

Omar, Sharon, etc., etc. out of ohio

In terms of recruiting, I see more of an advantage to scheduling (and, hopefully, beating) Big Ten teams and certain Big East teams than scheduling Texas teams.

BG should schedule at least one 1-aa team every year. Get a easy win and build confidence. Then schedule a mid major in Texas or the South to help recruiting. Teams like Tulane, Rice, SMU and Southern Miss. Round out the scheduling with one BCS conference team. However, BG should always do a 1 for 1 or 2 for 1 depending on the school. BG has a great reputation and should not settle for these one and outs with the BCS teams.

I don't think we should plan or wish for a I-AA home game every year.

I think we should try to have at least two home-and-home series working in any given year. That should yield one nonconference home game per year. Sometimes it will be a challenge, like Boise State. Other times it won't, like Temple or (presumably) Florida International. All fine and good.

I think we should fill the rest of the schedule with either:

1. Two-for-one series with recognizable BCS schools. Obviously, we are having trouble working these out or we can't figure out a way to make them pay the way we want to -- although, in fairness, the Wisconsin deal appears BETTER than this sort of deal. But we've done this in the past (e.g. Pittsburgh, Missouri), and I'd like to see us keep at it.

2. Select, lucrative, attractive one-and-dones with the biggest names in college football -- schools we don't appear able to talk into playing us in Cleveland right now. Ohio State is the prime example. Oklahoma fits, and so does Michigan. We don't need to do this every year... maybe every other year or every third year is enough (especially if we can make a habit out of the kind of series we've pulled off with Wisconsin).

I think some of these games are good for the program. I'd play Ohio State every year if we could.... because, one of these times, we are going to win and all hell will break loose.

If we do (1) and (2), then that means we are occasionally going to have to fill in the gaps with I-AA games to maintain a balanced home/road schedule.

Anyway... I think we see these philosophies at work in what Krebs is trying to do.

I understand where Brandon is coming from too... that could be a tough 2006 schedule, a bit too much of a good thing.

But, ultimately, I think he needs to suck it up and play.

What about Army & Navy? 1 for 1. Celebrate our military.

Can't Balckney help us get something with Maryland? Or did NIU ruin that for the MAC?

It would be great to play the Academies. We have had Navy at the Doyt before and it brought a good crowd. More people would come to a Navy/Army/Air force game than a Temple or SE Missouri St. game.

BIG 12

Kansas

Baylor

BIG East

UCONN
Louisville (doubtful)
UC (good interstate match-up)
Rutgers
USF (they suck I wouldn't, unless they came here first)
PITT (I think they will avoid coming into MAC stadiums from now on)
Syracuse (It would be sweet to play in the Carrier Dome)

These are just some ideas of good home draws and some BCS schools we could get to come here.

What about CUSA teams? Similar size, programs and a chance for these teams to see civilization.

I agree and like the idea about Army or Navy. I guess we could look to see what Akron vs. Army looks like next month as far as a competitive draw. I know an ex-cadet and he is planning on a big gathering when they play the Zipper-heads.

You know memphis willl bring and provide a big party scene.

But in the end I would always prefer a win raather than a Big-time BCS school loss. Bowl eligibility always relates to # of wins, not 6 wins and "well you played them 'horns really well but lost so you get to play here"
