Here were the top Division I-A career passers as McClure graduated:

Doug Flutie, Boston College (1981-84): 10,579
Brian McClure, Bowling Green (1982-85): 10,280
Ben Bennett, Duke (1980-83): 9,614
Jim McMahon, Brigham Young (1977-78, 80-81): 9,536
John Elway, Stanford (1979-82): 9,349
Chuck Long, Iowa (1981-85): 9,210
Mark Herrmann, Purdue (1977-80): 9,188

(pp 41-42, NCAA Division I football record book)

That is a pretty impressive list of college (and some NFL) QB's.

If it makes you feel any better, he's (my dad) older than you, he graduated in 84,

Correction: Blake's name did not end up on the Stanley Cup until the year he was traded to the Avalance (2001). His rookie year was 1989.

You were thinking of Ken Morrow, who after leaving BG, played on the 1980 Miracle on Ice Olympic team, then went to the NY Islanders, where he won 4 consecutive Stanley Cups, something NO ONE else has EVER done.

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Wow! I started this thread but it has gone in a direction I really didn't expect.

I think the debate is are we talking about a players college career or their work as a professional? I was in school through the McClure era and I still consider him the best QB to wear a Falcon uniform. Omar however can replace him if he breaks some of Brian's records at BG. But him leaving early for the pro's may stop him from doing that?

McClure I believe was drafted as a late-rounder by the Buffalo Bills. He played well in preseason with the Bills but never made the team during the Jim Kelly days.

Omar has a chance to not only make an NFL team, but to be a starter and maybe a very good one. In this case, Omar will be our only true "superstar" athlete.

A starting NFL QB in my eyes eclipses all the other accomplishments...even Wottle's gold medal. Antonio Daniels was a number 4 NBA pick and has won a NBA ring. He has been a serviceable and productive NBA player but hardly worthy of a "superstar" tag. Winning a Stanley Cup is great, but it doesn't mean as much to those of us not living in Canada.
Nate Thurmond is a good argument but the spotlight shown on the NBA in the 60's doesn't hold a candle to the exposure the NFL is getting nowdays.
Orel Herschiser is another good example of a great professional career, but his college career wasn't even on the map?

I just think Omar has the opportunity to accomplish more professionally than any athlete to come out of BG in my lifetime.

Ken Morrow played for the New York Islanders not to mention the United States 1980 Miricle on Ice Olympic Team! What does that have to do with Canadiens?

Believe it or not there are a large number of Americans who enjoy hockey!

Based on your criteria the listing of true "superstar" athletes would include Gus Frerotte, Tim Rattay, Craig Krenzel, Tim Couch, Akili Smith, and Ryan Leaf, while excluding Michael Jordan, Muhammed Ali, Babe Ruth, and Jesse Owens. They were all starting NFL quarterbacks at one point in their career, which eclipses all other accomplishments.

I'm not arguing with you that Omar has an excellent chance to become a superstar athlete, but I completely disagree with your rationale that he will be BGSU's first superstar athlete. You can't really think a starting QB in the NFL eclipses all other accomplishments in sports? I agree with you that the NFL is by far the most popular sport, but that doesn't take away from the fact that guys like Nate Thurmond, Dave Wottle, and Rob Blake are current or future Hall of Famers in their respective sports.

Don't downplay an individual gold medal holder and one time world record holder. There are 30 some starting QB positions to land.

I think the major sports TV networks would disagree! Hockey has been a real disappointment as a TV sport in this country.

Or maybe its just that although there is a smaller population of hockey fans, they are much more dedicated to the sport than fans of the other major U.S. spectator sports. Just maybe...

Its pretty sad that people who went to BG have such a poor attitude towards hockey. You all aparently missed out on one of the greatest traditions BGSU had, has and ever will have.

I think the biggest problem is that hockey loses so much on TV. Don't get me wrong, I watch it, but the game is so much better in person than it is on TV. I think this is evidenced by the fact that despite poor TV ratings, the attendance at NHL games is usually quite good.
