Well before it was a movie, Mandingo was a book. It was one of the first in the popular press to include graphic (in those days) sex scenes. The plot was about Mandingo, a slave, and his sexual relationship with the plantation owner's wife. It was quite controversial in the South.
For me and I suppose others of my generation and awareness, "Mandingo" has reference to a black stud servicing a white lady.
I hope and believe that the coach is not aware of this reference. As my southern classmates use to say, "He may be dumb, but he ain't stupid!"
All is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.
Gee...maybe I've been upside down on this all along. Maybe Marshall is putting the stupid in Huntington rather than the reverse.....accept my apologies for slurring your hometown.
BelieveNBG wrote:so you wouldn't have to worry about that. But if Willingham were to say something that could be taken in the wrong way and considered an attack on any one group of people, he too would be apologizing for his comments. What was OK 20 years ago will not be tolerated in todays world. Those that are in certain positions that are exposed to media coverage need to learn the rules and use a little common sense before speaking. Asking for an apology is the only way to prevent future incidents. Ignoring the issue will only promote future use of those type of phrases.

Very good points BNBG...you need to get out in front of these stupid insensitive mistakes fast...
This PC garbage is going to kill this country, I swear to God!! The man apologized and it honestly doesn't even sound like he knew he was being offensive!!! Should he have said it? Of course not. Should we hang him for it? Seems like that what some people want to do.
Listen, where I'm from I bet 90% of the people don't even know what that word means and have probably never freakin heard of it!!! The liberal media and all the socialist lib groups that scream about it have blown this thing WAAAAAAY out of proportion. This whole country is becoming San Francisco!!! Wake up and think for yourselves! Yes the guy should have made his apology, but he sincerely sounds like he said it without knowing what he was really saying. Let it go!!!
wow. FOr once calisooner, I dont want to smack you after a post you made j/k...or am I? 8)
Yeah, I'm about sick of that too, people need to lighten up, take their balls out of their purse, and stop crying. He appologized. Not only that, but he said it before the game, so I wasnt like he was talking smack b/c of how they got another crappy win or something.

I am sick of all of these guys apologizing. Bill Parcells for his "jap" comment, Jeremy Shockey for calling Parcelss a "***", Preutt for his "mandingo" comment, and countless other racial and ethnic slurs. These people wouldn't have said these things unless they meant them!!! Why do we need to hear a fake apology for all of this crap, does it give you a warm fuzzy everytime you here one of these prepared statements.....I say if they want to be ignorant let them and mext time a coach says we have jap plays or somebody drops an N'bomb or something just stand behind your stupidity and don't apologize.
When I was in first or second grade, I walked to school one day to discover someone had spraypainted a very muscular-looking verb on the north wall of my school. (It rhymed with "luck.")
I had no idea what it meant. But it was a cool-looking verb. I proceeded to use the verb in class -- and was instantly hustled out and threatened with a paddling (this was back when they could do that sort of thing).
If I am to take what some of you are saying at face value, perhaps I shouldn't have apologized. Perhaps I should have looked my teacher in the eye and told her: "Why are you so sensitive? This is political correctness run amok. This community is turning into San Francisco. Obviously I meant no offense. Why are you always playing the victim?"
Naturally, I didn't say any of those things. I apologized again and again. And it was sincere -- even though, as I explained again and again to my teachers, I had no idea what the word meant.
From what I understand, the Ohio State game was not the first time Pruett has used the word "Mandingo." He has described players at Florida, Tennessee, Western Michigan and Clemson as "Mandingo warriors."
It is safe to assume that if the Rainbow Coalition had not said something, Marshall might well be calling our players "Mandingo warriors" this November.
So, I say: thank goodness someone finally spoke up.
And Pruett *should* have apologized.
I think most of us can agree that:
-- Given its history in the slave trade, "Mandingo" is not a wise choice to describe an opponent.
-- Pruett may not have realized the full implication of what he was saying. This was probably a term he grew up with and had never thought through. Many of us grow up with such words. I can tell you that I used the word "gypped" for years before I realized it was a reference to Gypsies.
But even if Pruett didn't realize the full implication of what he was saying, he bears responsibility for what he says. The apology was entirely appropriate -- just as it was appropriate for me to apologize for obliviously using a word that rhymes with "luck" in my second-grade class.
Schade- By no means do I mean that it was perfectly Ok to say, but people make a HUGE deal about things liek this. If not for this forum, Id never have known he said that at all. Now I do. Am i making sence here? Yes its bad, but makign a big deal about it doesnt help the situation. Everything has to be so PC these days that you cant say anything anymore. Pretty soon animal rights activists will be saying that playing a falcon screech at our games promotes the suffering of animals b/c it sounds like the falcon may be in pain. I mean c'mon, people get bent out of shape way to easily is all Im saying. The point of forced appologies also makes sence, I mean, its like in poker when you get beat and you say "nice hand", you dont mean it, its jsut being polite. An empty saying has as much value as nothign at all.

Schade,
I think it was appropriate for you to apologize. You only used the word when you didn't know it's meaning. Once you found out that it was an inappropriate thing to say in that setting, you understood that it was wrong and apologized accordingly.
I believe the difference in what some people are saying is that Pruett used a word he knew the true meaning of and knowlingly used that word. And has used that word on several occasions. He knows it is not PC yet still uses the term. So now he apologizes for using it. Do you think he is apologizing for using a racial slur because he now understands it was wrong or because the Rainbow Coalition called him out it? He did it because of the Rainbow coalition, not because he thought it was insensitive. So what is the point in apologizing if you don't think you did anything wrong?
Your apology was sincere. Pruett's (and others as well, Paul Hornung for example) is not sincere. So if not making a sincere apology, what is the point of it? If you believe what you said is acceptable, stand by what you say and explain why you said it. Don't blame the person if the message they speak is correct, albeit uncomfortable for others to hear. and don't apologize for it.

People change. Sometimes it takes acts like this to change them, slowly but it does happen.
Look at Charlton Heston, by all accounts a liberal in the 60s- marched with Dr. King and others and now is a gun-totting, "from my cold dead hands" nut job.
