Who knew he was only 80? I thought he was at least 100 when I had him in the spring of '96!!!
Though if I would have had him earlier in my college career, I'm sure I would have taken a few more history classes. What a wealth of knowledge that man was.
The University has lost a great man (and his green 3-speed bike! )
I took Major Personalities of the 20th Century with Dr. Givens (Spring 1990). He was a wealth of knowledge and I was able to use many of the people he talked about with my middle school students the one semester I taught.
In addition to his teaching at the university, he also was the university historian. He wrote a book which updated Dr. Overman's history of BGSU.
God Bless You Dr. Givens. You are someone special.

Agreed! I had him for one class as well, looking back, if I'd known then what I know now, I'd have taken more.
Stu Givens was a good man, a kind man, and a giving man. I first met him while we spent an entire day in line at AA waiting for tickets to see Scott Hamilton in 1985 after he won the Gold Medal. He and I conversed the entire day. If I am not mistaken, Red Auberach was either his HS coach or gym teacher in Maryland where he grew up.

Wow....I thought he was about 80 when I had him in the fall of 77!!! Guess that dates me a bit doesn't it?

I had Dr. Givens several times as a guest on my WFAL and WBGU talk shows in the late 90's. He always did such a wonderful job of reminiscing about the history of BGSU and the city. He always seemed excited to be on the air with me. He was a great man and will be missed.
Wow. I just found this thread and immediately started crying. I have never met a kinder, gentler, more caring man in my life. Having had his Canadian History class is the only reason I am anywhere near grad school right now. I owe everything to him.
I know I just mentioned this in another thread, but I am happy to hear that others on this board were able to learn from him during his time at BGSU.
I miss him.

Actually, his daughter was at BG at about the same time as us Fanatic. You might have even known her, she was a big hockey fan.
Probably one of many people that I see at the rink all the time, but do not know their names!
