Poor recruiting?

Post by Dr.Sooner »

Bowling Green has been very respectable the past four years. However, it seems to me that most of Blackney's and Meyer's recruits have used up their eligibility. Thus, BG is void of talent and depth in many key areas. With this being said, Brandon has done a piss poor job recruiting and developing players. Special teams are horrific. Defense is about as bad as I have seen in the history of the program. It seems like Brandon inherited great players from the previous coaches and has since run the program into the ground. BG will still have a winning record, but they do not have the resources to match up with Toledo. Also, next year BG will be lucky not to go winless. It is a shame to watch this coach slowly ruin a great program.

Wow...and I thought I was harsh on the guy :)

I've been saying for years we've been a poorly coached team, and I've taken flak. Unfortunately Urban's talent is leaving and we are getting stuck with the dinner that Gregg Brandon has been cooking...and I think he's burnt the hell out of it...

You're absolutely right, Sooner. The quality players that we have are almost all seniors or a particular player that will leave for the NFL Draft. Seemingly, the only somewhat talented underclassmen on the team are Lichtensteiger, Patridge, Thomas, and Smith. I was looking at the media guide from J5's senior year and the incoming freshman class that year. Other than the 5 Blocks and Perry, most others have either left the program, been kicked off, or are not improving in the program. Virgil Robinson, Jenkins Reese, Robert Browning and on and on and on. We keep talking about recruiting all this speed, agility, and athleticism and I just don't see it.

To be fair, that first class was filled in less than one month because Urbie left late in the process. As a result, a lot of guys were signed that were boderline academically because we were thier only option and they were our only option.

The Turner, Winovich, Partridge and Briggs class looks promising, but it's early to tell.

Yeah, I don't think it is poor recruiting that is the cause of what is going on now, though I appreciate your analysis for what it is worth, Dr. Sooner (and the argument hammb has been making). I just think it is poor coaching. The same thing is happening down at Miami right now with Hoep's successor. No matter how much talent a team has, if they are not coached well and don't perform as a unit, that talent isn't worth much. I really do appreciate the effort that our kids have given, even in the two losses this season.

I'm kinda wishing that GB would have taken that job at UNLV last year. Go Falcons, beat Toledo!!

YOu can't recruit all ofeense and expect to field a good defense. Converting offensive minded players to defense does not work. The two sides of the ball are completely different. I am an armchair QB and I know that, BG staff seems to have no clue. This is why we can't tackle.
