Sigh....I was there
Well, after reading a number of posts - a lot of your thoughts match many of the Falcon Faithful that were there.
First, Falconboy- I owe you an apology. My orange colored glasses got blown off by the Smurf Turf pretty early in the game.
A few points:
1. It's time for the defensive co-ordinator to get down on the field to "encourage" the players to play it or park it. I have no business evaluating anyone's job but my own, but you can see that the gentlemen on the field coaching defense are not the fiery type. So let's get the main man there to "coach". It isn't working from the box above- so let's shake it up.
2. On offense- the plays called in from the sidelines were changed at the last few seconds many many times. I know this is our offense, but IMHO, with Omar not at peak, call the flippin play and run it. Let OMAR get his head around it and execute it. We changed SO many times at 5 or less seconds left and he was rushing gettiing everyone informed. And YES, he does need to tuck it and run the ball, and slide or go OB. He is a big boy.
BUT I HAVE TO SAY THIS. After the game- he came out and got interviewed. HE could have refused and been a jerk. He took it like a man. He represented us as a gentleman. And there were little kids wanting autographs and he signed them.
3. The blue turf and the all blue uniforms should not be allowed. Ok- they have the damn turf, but we couldn't find the ball in the stands from above, how can the guys on the field find who the heck has it. That was a pretty effective weapon and we can see why they win there.
4. Great atmosphere. Not just the students (they only get 5000 tickets). The whole crowd is into it. It was LOUD. everywhere.
5. Tough to play midweek games at night. Everyone is out of sync. Sitting around - no other games to watch. Oprah wasn't even a good one.
Wrong time zone. But I agree, if you can't get up for national TV, then maybe we need that come to Jesus meeting you all have mentioned.
6. We need a home game! Did I say- we need a home game? Bring on Temple.
7. The freshman running back did a nice job getting through some holes. Hope the films show the same.
8. The first XP was a tough snap and crooked ball placement. I won't put that one on Fry. But you all are right about the kidckoffs and coverage. Exactly what happened. We are a nationally recognized team(yeah for stinking up the place last night- but USUALLY for the right things). We ought to find someone who wants to hit someone on special teams.
That is what I saw being there. Oh- and they were not bigger than we were. We should have matched up a LOT better.

That is a long way and a lot of money to see the worst BG game in the last half a decade.
If I had paid to fly out there, I would have requested reimbursement from Coach Brandon. I'm glad this game was on a Wednesday night because if it was a Saturday game, I would have probably been there.
Thanks for the on-the-scene report from Boise! I agree with the play calling late in the play clock. It seems like we normally do that with more time on the play clock, but last night it seemed that everything was so rushed at the end of the clock. I'm sure their crowd noise had a little to do with that as well. Oh well, we got our butts handed to us. I can't wait to get to the Doyt next weekend. Hopefully, this team just needs some good home cooking (and a special teams coach).

I mentioned this is the chat room last night as well. Yes, we check the sideline for the call almost every play, but it seemed like last night they changed the call a LOT more then we normally do. I think we out-thought ourselves.always a falcon wrote:

If I can haul my sorry carcass all the way to Boise, you bet your sweet bippy I will see you and the "STREAK Man" at BG vs OU! Looking forward to it.1987alum wrote:always a falcon:
A truer fan I do not know, so this must have been really tough to watch in person. Thanks for the frank analysis.
Will we see you at the Ohio game?

Boise State changes its defense a lot. That's what Brandon said on the pregame. I would think Stud/Brandon/Omar were just trying to stay a step ahead of what Boise State was showing.Warthog wrote:I mentioned this is the chat room last night as well. a long trip, but well worth it I will say. Why is that....you showed BSU what kind of class we have, they have said many times how classy our fans were even when facing the fact that our...team wasnt there over at their board...they enjoyed troping us, and presume we will try to return that favor on our own turf.
Now hopefully you can see a team that likes that wining feeling a lot more than the dish we served up at BSU

And as soon as Boise sees Omar changing the play, wouldn't they change their defense again? It's just like Manning and the Colts. Keep changin the defense right until the snap so the QB can't make decisions before the snap about where he is going with the ball. Like I said, I think we tried to out-think ourselves instead of just lining up and running the play. Let the defense adjust away and confuse themselves.Schadenfreude wrote:Boise State changes its defense a lot. That's what Brandon said on the pregame. Warthog: Not necessarily; I didn't see Boise blatantly switching things after Omar called the play (not like they had to or anythingWarthog wrote:And as soon as Boise sees Omar changing the play, wouldn't they change their defense again? Re: Sigh....I was there
Your points are correct. Our WRs do read the defense and run certain routes. Which brings me to an interesting question. Since we don't change formations, what can we be possibly changing as far as the play goes? From a run to a pass or vice versa? Doesn't seem like that is the case, especially in obvious passing downs.1987alum wrote:Warthog: Not necessarily; I didn't see Boise blatantly switching things after Omar called the play (not like they had to or anythingWarthog wrote:And as soon as Boise sees Omar changing the play, wouldn't they change their defense again? If we had to switch formations, that would be one thing, but we don't.
Which brings me to another question, how do we know what formation to start in? Is there a simple sign after each play that tells everyone where to go? Like 1 means 4 WR, Pope left of QB, Sanders wide right, Sharon slot left, etc? Then we call a play after seeing what the defense is giving us?
And why don't we change formations? Get to the line quicker and see where we can get a mismatch and change the formation. We line up and let their best defenders cover our best WRs. And we hardly ever use motion, except when we throw the quick pass out to the motion guy and I already have that play figured out.

Yeah, I be it that was painful. No need to apologize to me. I was hoping to be proven wrong for once. Having my worst nightmares proved right did not make me feel better I can asure you of that. I just hope that hearing Coach Brandon bash himself and coaches and team for everything bad in that game shows up in some actualy tuning and changing of whatever it is we need to do to get on the winning track fast.always a falcon wrote:Well, after reading a number of posts - a lot of your thoughts match many of the Falcon Faithful that were there.
