Locatoin of Band @ Perry Stadium

Post by Dayons_Den »

Ok, so I got in a debate about locale of the band and I think I lost. I didn't believe that for some games in 1999 the band sat on the East side of Perry Stadium, I have since been corrected.

Does anyone know why the band was sent over there for such games as the Toledo game?

Also, what are everyone's thoughts on where the best place is for the band. Also not sure what the new sportsmanship rules state about the location. . .

My thoughts on a few places:
CURRENT WEST SIDE- nice access to the field for them, good location to centralize the student section.

NORTH ENDZONE- would actually make it look like there is a decent amount of people in the stands when they show extra points on tv, better sound to the West side

EAST SIDE- don't think they can be there because of the new rules, but would send their sound back to the heart of the fans on the West side. . .

Ah, yes. The alumni fiasco of 1999! I remember it well. Duelling bands. Sheesh. Alums on the west side, regular band on the east. It was a cluster-****.

Basically, the band leadership caved to the pressures applied by the athletic department (wasn't that much pressure, I assure you) and moved the band to the east side so that the fans could hear the tunes better. I think it was to get the band out of seats that could be for students that didn't show up to the game anyway.

As I was told at the time, "the response [was] overwhelmingly positive of our new location." So much so that the band promptly moved back to their original seating on the west side (which is where they belong.)

For what its worth... the band location is not a "rule" it is a strong suggestion for the schools as is the location of the students. Hence Miami is not moving either anytime soon.

Before anyone gets in an uproar...

1) The general admission seating is open to anyone who buys a GA seat, therefore it is first come first serve.

2) Students pay for a ticket regardless of whether they go or not, so they should have their choice of the best seats available when they arrive in GA.

3) Why would you piss off your season ticket base and students to accomodate rules that will negatively influence your overall attendance? Students love their seats, alumni love their seats, the only individuals complain are the visiting team. Would it be any different if it was a loud enclosed stadium such as the shoe?

4) The MAC has bigger issues to worry about, like how Buffalo and other MAC schools are going to fail on this attendance issue. Lets not worry about the haves... lets worry about the have nots...

5) The location of any band should be the best place for everyone to hear them... but in the case of BG I think an endzone would hamper the sound on any windy day!

I personally like the thought of having the marching band in the north end zone. Especially after the SAC (student athletic center) is built. From what I have heard that facility will be two levels with a patio facing the field. I would build a nice seating area for the marching band, and make it large enough to seat the alumni marching band as well. Since there would be a solid wall behind them you would not have wind coming from the north, and the stadium itself would bloce and east or west winds. That patio would serve as a shelter from the rain, and netting could be used to make sure the kicked footballs do not find their way into a trombone or tuba. Plus the band would be right where they needed to be for pre-game. Those are the positives from what I would see as a band perspective. As for a fan perspective, there would be no need to try and see over the tuba's. I loved my time in marching band, and they don't get all the respect they deserve at times.

My brother was in the band during '99 and said they were moved over there so the fans could hear them. They moved us back because back then we didn't have stadium lights and the sun would warm everyone up nicely in those heat absorbing uniforms. The past few years we have been told to turn towards the crowd when we play so all the fans can hear us now that we are facing away from the home stands. I have heard talk that we are supposed to be in the North Endzone this year and was fine with that when I also heard a rumor they were recovering those seats with aluminum or something like that. The last time I was out that way I believe they were still the lovely wooden splinter seats. If we do move down there, I hope people don't start tearing their new uniforms on the wood. Either way, I'll still be standing the whole game and going crazy so I couldn't care less what is below my backside :D

wasn't meant to be harsh

The book is for people who are sticklers about punctuation and grammar.

I will never let that phrase slip by w/o saying something about it. The pope could be talking with the president and my mom, and if one of them used it I'd interject and correct. I don't care!!! It's just that phrase...when used incorrectly, means something COMPLETELY different than its intended meaning.

Oh...and that book's available at Amazon. ;-)

Of course, no one has yet to bring up the misspelling of the thread: Locatoin of Band.

It's LOCATION of the Band.

Eats, Shoots, and Leaves is definitely a good book (i.e., funny) if you're a grammar/punctuation natzi (guilty, as charged). However, I couldn't finish it because it drove me crazy... it's written by a British woman, and it's written in British English. The different spellings and different words for things I can deal with, but some of the punctuation differences drove me crazy enough that I stopped reading. Sigh. What I did read was really funny, though.

...I'm sorry, but that would be HILARIOUS.

All the same though, being in the front row of the stands (if you don't count the percs)..... if we do end up in the north end zone, I'll opt for the net. No matter HOW much I'd like to see a football get jammed into a tuba.

UPDATE!!

Post by Metz »

The band will be officially sitting in the North endzone this year directly behind the goal post. The seats for just the band will be covered with some material (I'm guessing aluminum) so we don't tear our new uniforms. It looks like we are now the official field goal catchers! I am going to miss the side angle of the game, that is for sure! But atleast I can watch the replays on the video screen now :D
