Attendance Figures

Post by BGSU-Ph.D. »

I read some of your posts doubting the 19,462 attendance figure for the game. It certainly looked like more than that on T.V. I could have sworn it was in the 21,500 - 22,000 range.

The same thing happened last year at the Marshall game. The official attendance was in the 18,000s, but I could have sworn it was over 20,000.

So, how is attendance tabulated? Are we getting “lowballed”?

Glad it looked packed, because it wasn't. It was just enough to camoflauge most of the aluminum benches, but there was definitely some gaps in the seating area. With capacity in the 23,000 range now, I would say 19,500 is right on.

If you are referring to why people leave the games early, I've always been under the impression that it is because it is a nightmare trying to get away from the stadium at the same time as everyone else. There just aren't the roads around the stadium to facilitate the mass transit of a stadium full of people (not that I think the U. or city should be putting in more roads for football games). This game was a blowout, and I think a lot of our fans have learned from some of our big games like NIU and UT in 2003 when everyone did wait until after the game to leave that they should get out while they can and the game isn't in question.

I, too, wish people would stick around until the end, but I can't fault them for taking off early.

i thought the 19,462 was reasonable, the east side looked somewhat emptyish, and you have to remember no North endzone, so i would say it looked about right. as for people leaving the game early, well i hate that. but i dont blame them its a blowout and people have other places to be. also as someone said earlier they can get out faster, i guess just be happy they came!
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

Yes, remember that it's Homecoming weekend. There's lots of beverages to drink and a short time to do it in!

But seriously, it's the first home game in a month. I think plenty of students showed up and actually stuck around for such a blow out.

I would reason because the score was 70-7 with the game not in question by the end of the first quarter.

It is REAL easy to solve the traffic in leaving the Doyt. We fire up the grill and tailgate for about two hours after the game and watch the cars parade by, while we are having dinner and our favorite beverage.

OK. On t.v. it looked like the empty seats on the east side were limited to the upper corners. Regardless, the place looked packed.

No, there was plenty of room to squeeze more people in high up on the 50. As someone else said, the benches may not have been visible, but there was room.

I think 19,000-plus sounds about right.

I'm always an advocate for staying until bitter, ugly (for the opponent) end and watching team do Ay Ziggy Zoomba. Today was a rare exception for me; I never went back in after halftime.

We had a very nice reunion for BG News alumni, and I was catching up with people I hadn't seen in more than ten years. There were probably 35 or 40 of us former Newsers who spend the second half drinking beer in the tailgating tent.

I love football; I'm a season ticket holder and all that -- but this just made sense for me yesterday.

Well, that and the fact that when it's 70-7, the games pretty much over... Not that I'd ever leave, but I can see why someone might.
