I mean really, the class Mammalia consists of an extremely diverse group in the animal kingdom with certain distinguishing features. Mammals are endothermic and have a high rate of metabolism, just like the class Aves. In fact, if your into Linnean classification, then both mammals and birds are in the same Domain (Eukarya), Kingdom (Animalia), Phylum (Chordata), and Subphylum (Vertebrata). However, mammals and birds diverge at the Class level due to unique features to mammals and birds. Mammals for example, have hair and mammary glands. Birds on the other hand have feathers. Now, it true that both are structurally similar in that the are both comprised of keratin (quills of feathers), but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a scientist that would consider them the same.
