2005 Recruiting Class Stars

Post by Rollo83 »

The offensive and defensive stars of last year's recruting class can be dtermined to be "busts" after only 7 weeks into the their college careers.

Nick Lawerence gets caught distributing drugs, and now Luke Alexander quits the team after evidently not going to class all Spring.

Beautiful. I am afraid this will coem back to bite us down the road. This is the equivalent of Ohio State losing Ted Gin and Marcus Freeman from their 2004 recruting class. They would not be the same team without them and I am afraid we won't be the same with Alexander and Lawerence.

Losing Alexander hurts but it wont' kill us , we do after all always keep a stock of about 20 wide recievers. :-\

The sky is falling, we're all going to die.

On the bright side, Antonio Smith, Kenny Lewis and Bobby Thomas are looking like pretty good football players.

Rollo:

Maybe the stars were just chosen improperly. As Flipper points out, we have a defensive star-in-the-making (Smith) and what appears to be an offensive standout, too (Thomas).

I'm actually more concerned with the 2004 class right now. Partridge, of course, is excelling and we're all still optimistic about Turner. But who else? Look at the sophomores (and other redshirt freshmen) in numerical order:
* Winovich, despite looking good on special teams as a freshman, hasn't done much to distinguish himself this year.
* Scott Goodwin. Who?
* Waldron, Hood, Dozier ... still not sure what to make of them.
* Joe Shaefer, another workmanlike D-lineman.
* John Haneline has great bloodlines and, like Winovich, high expectations, but hasn't had a chance to prove much, either.
* Adrian Baker, Donald Sprenkel, Jarod Wells. Who?
* Nick Davis has played a lot, but not sure how to rate him given the overall performance of our defense against the run. Same for Brandon Mack and Brandon Curtis.
* Aaron Kent, Jeff Fink ... not sure where they sis on our O-line's two deep.
* Andre Boomer (TE) has a great football name, but I don't know much about him.
* Garth Hartung (DL) has a great football name, too, but I don't know much about him.
* I like what I've seen of LB Diyral Briggs, but he hasn't jumped off the screen, either.

Which is stupid. Santonio Holmes is like 5x the player of Ted Ginn. Being fast is a very small part of being a receiver.

A couple of these guys are getting some very good playing time, but you need to remember, they are just sophomores and redshirt freshman. Yes, they can contribute, but they are more likely to bloom around their junior years. Give them sometime.

Also, how highly rated was Corey by the recruiting services? Not at all. So you may still see some stars from the 2005 class that no ones knows about yet.

[joke]I heard that since Antonio Smith has shown great hands and some fancy running after intercepting the ball that the coach is going to move him to wide receiver next year![/joke]

Totally Offtopic, and I don't want to get it moved to another forum, but let's just say that as an OSU fan I think Ted Ginn is the most overrated player in college football.

Can he do some sweet things with the ball in his hands? Yeah. But all he is right now is a punt returner. He cannot run routes & he doesn't catch the ball exceptionally well. He should be playing CB, but he's not because OSU is devoid of offensive talent.

The guy had like 30 touches last season and he's a heisman contender this year? Nope. Sorry...mini-rant. I like Ginn, and he is special, but he's not a complete football player at all.

Based on this year, I think that you need to keep all the studs you can on defense. I also like Thomas and Turner and Partridge for next year's offense. In fact, don't hate me, but I like Thomas better than Lane.

The point of this thread was to say that even the best programs would suffer if it lost the top offensive and defensive recruits of a particular class.

Given that we struggle normally to recruit players that can compete with teams in the top of the MAC as well as BCS conference teams, we can't take very many hits like losing your top two recruits.

I am not crying that the sky is falling...merely stating that this hurts a program of our size especially hard. Lets hope the players we do have on the team are going to be productive and lead BG to future success.

I didn't know Ruben Ruiz was from Oro Valley? I live like five minutes from there - and his parents must be loaded.

Huh. Wierd.
