Ohio State...Reason for Jacobs to stay

Don't know if you noticed or not, but we are added into the OSU schedule for next season. Another good Mac Big Ten matchup and maybe... just maybe... enough of a game to keep Omar here for one more year.

Yes, that game has been discussed. I don't think the schedule for next year will have much influence on Jacobs' decision to stay or go, but the schedule will be BG's best ever (or, at least, best in a long time).

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another shot at OSU.

But with Wisky and Boise State already on the sked, that is quite a schedule. I'm all for playing the best but that is gonna be tough.

Will it influence Omar? I don't think so. He grew up following the Florida teams. I like the game at FIU, though that will be outta the question for the Freaks to attend.

OSU is also open in 07 and 08 and if I am not mistaken 08 is when we travel to the big house and back to Norman

You are mistaken... but nothing new there.

Neither Michigan nor Oklahoma appear on our future schedule.

Bowling Green is scheduled to play at Virginia Tech on Aug. 30, 2008 and at Pittsburgh on Sept. 13.

Also, negotiations appear to be underway way for a series with Boise State in 2007 and 2008. That may yield a home game with Boise State in 2008.

if we run the table and/or Omar puts up 50 td's he will go pro, and I can't blame him. Millions of Dollars vs. The Doyt. God, I love the Doyt but you have serious mental issues if you chose the Doyt.

Omar's choices for next year...
1. Stay at BG to play against OSU.
2. Get drafted by an NFL team. Get a huge salary and signing bonus and a chance to play against the super bowl champion.

Playing OSU was not enough incentive to stay at BG another year.

At the rate things are going...wouldn't one of the first teams needing a QB be the Green Bay Packers?

Brrrrrr!! That could make anyone reconsider, especially someone from Florida. But then again, most of you make the obvious point....$$$$$$

A most realistic view. But the way this Anthony Turner can move and throw? Wow...

I'd love to say Omar will pull a Matt Leinert but I don't see that happening.

I'm gonna keep enjoying watching him play at BG...and let the chips fall where they may.

Playing OSU might not be enough of an incentive, but being the number one overall pick in the NFL draft might be.

Playing against other NFL talent is always an incentive to leave, and there's no way to deny that really.

However, I would argue that Omar will not be receiving a Huge salary & signing bonus, at least not by NFL standards. We discussed this a little last week, and I think right now Omar is, at best, the 3rd best QB going into next year's draft. Leinart is still ahead of him, and Vince Young has flown up draft boards, because the boy learned to throw.

Right now I would bet that Omar grades somewhere in the 15-25 pick range. You've also got to factor how many teams have already invested in a QB. There are a lot of teams that will flat out NOT pick a QB because they've picked one high in recent years. They cannot afford to have 2 first round QBs eating their salary cap with one of them not playing.

In the NFL draft it is worth a LOT of money to be in the top 5. Getting picked 15th will get you about $10-12 million LESS signing bonus than the #5 pick. If you are a guy with potential to go in the top 10 if you return to school it makes sound financial sense to return to school rather than settle on the a mid to late first round salary.

Sure, all the salaries look extravagant to most of us, but there is a big difference between $40 million with $18 million guaranteed and $20 million and $5 million guaranteed. Both a lot of money, but dropping those 10 picks is going to cost you about $20 million bucks...YIKES!

What does this all mean? I dunno. I still expect Omar to leave early, but it is not the foregone conclusion that it might've looked like before the season. He has shown some weaknesses (especially in nationally televised games) and VY has really impressed. Right now I'd be shocked if Omar was a top 10 pick, and dropping below that level is, as I pointed out, a lot of money. He could realize this and be better served by returning to school, having a shot against big time competition, tons of heisman hype, then being a top 10 pick next year. I dunno, right now I wouldn't be shocked either way. My gut instinct says he goes to the NFL, but as an NFL fan, I don't think he's ready and wouldn't want my team to spend a top 10 pick on him.

I don't know if returning to BG would put Omar into the top 5 in the 2007 draft? He is losing two huge targets in Sanders and Sharon. Plus he loses his backfield experience in Pope and Lane. In other words, he'll be asked to carry more of the load with some inexperienced skill people around him. I think that will translate into smaller personal & team numbers. This will be spinned as him having an off year, thus dropping his draft value.

If he is projected as a first round pick this year (no matter where its at), I got to believe its in his best interest to leave. Plus, injury insurance only protects him to a certain point so he has that to consider.

I know Young has been getting his share of the press, but I got to believe Omar is the better pro prospect at this pont. I'll take a Brady or Manning over Vick any day of the week in the NFL. Pocket passers with mobility are what's needed in the NFL. Young is agreat athlete but I still worry about his passing and ability to read defenses.

Do you all think that Omar will really go first round considering the losses against Wisconsin and Boise and the fact that we run the spread mostly from the gun? I would think a franchise would want someone that is a little more "proven" against bigger programs.

I would think that he might want to stick around another season to try and put up some big numbers against two Big Ten teams and Boise. Good showings, and possibly some wins against them could up his currency. AM I way off on this thought? Do we really lose that much talent next season that beating those teams is going to be practically impossible?
