Just a thought on the botched kick return

I have and did not have any issue with the return. i do have issue with the seriously flawed punt formation our spec teams are runing...it is weak, and other teams know it.....why fix it since it was not broken...it is has only proven to be more of a risk than benifit to every team that has used it.

From Brandon's mouth on special teams.
Q: The special teams weren't so special Saturday.
Gregg Brandon: No. We struggled. The first punt that was tipped, our protectors were not close enough to the line of scrimmage. That's a detail thing, that's a coaching thing, and we've got to do a better job of that. And, Nate (Fry) took too many steps. He can't climb up those guys' (blockers') backs, or they (opponents) will jump over and block the punt. On the second one, (returned) for the touchdown, we had everyone accounted for, but we did not block one of the guys that we were supposed to block. So, it was not a scheme problem, it was an execution problem, or lack thereof. On the kickoffs, we have been inconsistent covering kicks all year because we have been inconsistent at kicker. The one they popped across midfield on us was supposed to be a sky left, and it ended up outside the right hash. So, we had three guys over there covering, and that was a problem. We've just got to keep working through those issues. The kickoff return, on the bloop kick (recovered by Ohio), just kind of got caught up in the wind, and the same thing happened to them. We struggled to handle that. On the opening play, we were trying to set up a reverse and it backfired. ... We've just got to do a better job.

And that first touchdown pass -- Omar to Sharon to Sanders -- was drawn up that way.factman wrote:OK.......here is the scoop. We botched it intentionally, so teams have to prepare for all different kinds of variations from it, to the extent that our normal, return will work like a clock and we will score TD's against Toledo on returns. It was the only way we could do it unless we just cut out a portion of the film (ie UT vs EMU) so we did it this way!!!

I could not agree more. Superior teams just use their talent to win. Inferior teams have to trick the superior team to try to get an agvantage.hammb wrote:I only see the need if you are inferior talentwise

It looks like he is making an excuse for each punt team problem. Can't he see the bigger picture that the whole alignment is screwed and that causes the other problems?

I couldn't disagree more. Gadget plays are great ways to create instant momentum (in this case bad). Like I said early, if the play had worked, Ohio would have the wind taken from its sail and the game could've been over before the first quarter ended. Using superior talent to win is great, but certainly takes longer.Warthog wrote:I could not agree more. Superior teams just use their talent to win. Maybe I overstated my opinion. Superior teams do not need to try gadget plays on special teams. They are incredibly high risk, and are rarely successful.
Offenses are welcome to throw in a 'trick' play at any time. That is usually something you set up through the game. Keep running a play, and that use that same action to pull the defense in and then reverse/throw deep instead of short/WR pass back to the QB (Magner special
). Those all fine at the appropriate time. Running a goof ball, high risk play on the opening kickoff was just stupid. IMO

FWIW, we have all the available M*A*S*H seasons on DVD and watch them regularly.
