Different defensive scheme

Before the OU game, Solich said that BG had changed its scheme from one that wasn't working against Wisky-Balls Tate-Boise State to something that did work against Temple.

Some here *cough* falconboy *cough* dismissed this, saying what we did differently (I'm paraphrasing here) was play a simply inferior team.

Well, in his post-mortem, Solich again mentioned the new scheme.

I haven't studied the films, obviously, but I get the sense that there's a lot more movement in the last two games - more stunting from the lineman and linebackers making quicker reads and flying to the ball.

Other observations or thoughts?

I read this to mean that our change in scheme from last year was not working in the two bad losses, but that after several games the players are now comfortable with the change as witnessed by the result.

Interesting. I guess I could read it that way, but Solich was a little more blunt in the pre-game press conference, saying that BG had changed its scheme from the first three games, so I'd wager that's what happened.

If I'm not mistaken I think we put another linebacker on the line and ran a from of a 5-2. This allowed to either blitz the down backer or have him drop back into coverage.

i saw the corner pinching down on the line if he had no recievers on his side of the ball. usually this happened to the boundary side corner. they would face the opposite sideline 2 by 2 outside of the d end and watch for the stretch play or option.

the linebacker picked up the TE and the corner would just play outside in on run support like normal. this new position set him up so he couldn't be beat to the corner. the cb would get to the RB before he got between the numbers and the sideline avoiding an open field tackle situation. if the RB did get outside the numbers he was usually still behind or near the LOS where there was plenty of interior help arriving to finish the play.

i like how BG shut the option down this week. i was nervous ou might shuffle pass out of the option, but everytime it looked like they were setting that up the defense had it covered. i was impressed.
