BG NEWS...clueless???

Post by BelieveNBG »

Everyone around here is always criticizing the national media for not having a clue, but why does BGs own paper not have a clue? Geez...
And after a slow start to the year, the Falcons are making the grade at mid-term time. Here’s a synopsis of what has transpired thus far for BG, which improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the MAC with a 38-14 win over Ohio on Saturday.

That time it wasn't a generalization. It was specific to that writer.

The Sports department this year thus far has been pretty disappointing. It seems like they don't even go back to read what they wrote for mistakes.

I don't understand the uproar over the error in one record.

Well, a lot of it has to do with journalistic integrity. If as a journalist you don't have the inclination to re-read your article before it goes to print, in my opinion you have no business being a journalist.

A lot of the students working for the BG News have no idea that they are working for one of the most prestigious student newspapers in the country. They need to act like it. Period.

Gfitch: As a former sports writer, I can tell you that there are some errors that just can't happen. This is one of them.

Biggest boner I saw in my four years there was when the paper spelled the city "Arkon" -- on the front page in 60 point bold type.

It happens. '87 sounds mortified, and I'm sure the writer is, too.

But it happens.

I've been very dissapointed in the BG News Sports Section this year. Believe me, its not the first mistake they've made. Take this article for example:
http://www.bgnews.com/vnews/display.v/A ... _archive=1

First off, the title makes little sense, it wasn't an ugly win, and thats not a great way to support the team. Then, in the main article in the Sports Section:
"Parks was extremely active all game, amassing eight tackles and causing havoc for Ohio’s offense."

But later in the same section on the same day (different article)
http://www.bgnews.com/vnews/display.v/A ... d35a77bcfe

"Parks was extremely active all game, amassing eight tackles and causing havoc for Ohio’s offense."

I mean which was it? 8 or 10? They should really be getting their stats consistent. I've also seen several front page news about OSUcks and little snipets about our own football team. Its our own frickin newspaper, and our own team can't get the front page?

I can live with the errors but that would piss me off.

I, as well as Buddy Urban Larranaga, can attest to the fact that the coaches hate this. I have incurred the wrath of a certain football coach, as did he of a certain successful former coach who may or may not be in the Sunshine State right now, when there was too much OSU stuff on our pages and not enough BG stuff.

My punishment, on the other hand, was simply the third degree in media outings. Had to love that.

Having said all that, cue Metz to defend in 3, 2, 1....

Yeah what else is new...I really don't think they've heard of this new high-tech concept called editing/proofreading. There have been a lot of mistakes in the past 4 years, and not just in sports. Simple mistakes like that should not happen. Plain and simple.

While I half-jokingly said Metz will defend these guys...Which he should...I'm sure all these guys ('87, right?) who have worked there can attest to the difficulty of working there. New writers are hard to coach, and when I left, there were people there laying out pages who had no idea around Quark/Indesign.

My senior year, I had a serious girlfriend, the editor was a bitch, and I was getting ready to graduate. If there were two more mistakes and I left an hour earlier, frankly, it wasn't that big of a deal (especially after I nailed down a job).

Now, having said all that, I now work for a 112,000 circulation paper that has 95% percent of our market's readership at any point (corporate speak for we're doing our jobs pretty well). But, I work on a sports desk with insane deadlines and a lot of eggs in our basket. There is, undoubtedly, going to be a mistake in a 16-page Sunday section when two of our three big colleges play on Saturday night, or when you're trying to get 45 high schools in an edition in a half hour.

Every paper, especially ones with student journalists, will make mistakes.

ESPECIALLY if you're a student who hasn't volunteered to work there, f-ing deal with it.

That was always my motto when friends/classmates would bitch about mistakes in the paper when I was there until 1 a.m. the night before. GO VOLUNTEER TO HELP THEM. They will welcome it with open arms.
