What is it with the offense?
We seem to be lacking consistency. We rarely go three and out. It always seems we can pick up a first down or two but can't keep it going. Is it the play calling? Execution? Lack of a deep passing game? Something about it just eats at me that we can't put the points on the board despite racking decent yardage. The announcers tonight toward the end of the game talked about how the BG offense didn't do much after the first series. I know I didn't think our offense was that bad. It wasn't like NIU's defense was stopping anything. We could dink and dunk for 25 - 30 yards each possession, but then get stopped. Why does this happen???

Actually,
when we played Oklahoma, the defense was on the field for 40 minutes. The offense has not done a good job of staying on the field and controlling tempo. There are probably 2 contributing factors...offense stalls too often and defense not stopping the run. We have work to do on both sides of the ball. Neither side is having a stellar performance.

You know, Coach Brandon made a comment along the lines of putting too much on Omar's shoulders. One thing I wonder is about some of our third down passes--we seem to throw short of the mark a lot and try to run for it. Young QBs sometimes have a tendency to check down to their safe routes, which could also account for the lack of deep balls. No real knowledge on this, just wondering.

Omar does need to work on his deep accuracy. He's overthrown open guys and he had a pick against SEMO that was the direct result of underthrowing his open WR. This may be leading Omar to try the safer pass first.
I'm sure that improvement will come with experience. Until then, we're going to have to add some things to the short and intermediate game or teams will just jam us and sit on the screens. Maybe we need to use the TE strsight downfield more to open the sidline routes a bit?
