Miami holds on to East????
Miami holds on to East????
I'm don't like this headline, a week after Elton's highlight of Omar this article makes no mention of BG leading the East, only Miami controls their own destiny, blah, blah, blah...with one game of help.
Miami holds on to East

What's the best position to play from: as an underdog, or with your back against the wall?
We'll find out Saturday as the Miami RedHawks, for the second straight season, must play with their backs against the wall from here on out if they hope to win a third straight MAC East Division title.
Miami already has two league losses, but none has come against MAC East Division opponents. By winning all their East games, and with one game worth of help along the way, the RedHawks can still win the division via head-to-head tiebreaker.
Last season, Miami lost its first MAC East game to rival Marshall but won the rest in the division, and Marshall lost twice. Coach Shane Montgomery said the key now is to just take care of business.
"The first thing you've got to do is what you need to do," he said. "Fundamentals. Make sure you're doing the right things to make plays. We've talked about our goals are not over. The main thing we tried to stress, and the players need to know, is we can't look ahead."
Upon further review:
Ohio University coach Frank Solich said his team may have regressed a bit in a 38-14 loss at Bowling Green.
Despite recovering the ball at Bowling Green's 4 to start the game, partially blocking one punt, completely blocking another and recovering a pooch kick-- all in the first half -- OU could only muster seven points and trailed, 14-7.
"We had opportunities to put ourselves in position to make that a game, and possibly have a chance to win," Solich said. "But we did not execute on either side of the ball to get it done. The game should have been tied at halftime, at the worst."
Sobering news:
MAC officials are still buzzing over the announcement last week that Kent State President Carol Cartwright will resign once her successor is in place. Her 15-year tenure has included a growing influence behind the scenes in the MAC and NCAA, including stints as a member of the prestigious Knight Commission and as a member of the NCAA board.
"It's a loss to the conference and to the NCAA," KSU Athletic Director Laing Kennedy said. "She has been [NCAA president] Myles Brand's right hand."

Miami does not control their own destiny, which he points out in the article when he says they need one game help in addition to winning out.AZZZZ wrote:I'm don't like this headline, a week after Elton's highlight of Omar this article makes no mention of BG leading the East, only Miami controls their own destiny, blah, blah, blah...

2 things....
1.) Typical NE Ohio journalism coverage of BG. Hardly any mention about the fact that a decisive game looms in mid-November, and I assume they need help from Toledo in the next game.
The coverage is actually worse from the Beacon Journal. Hardly a Sunday morning goes by that I am limited to maybe, repeat maybe, a 1 inch block of recap and no box score. All this from a school that is 2 hours away...just like the Buckeyes ...who get front page (no argument there) and then several other arrticles in the college pages. I guess its more important to cover BW's throttling of Allegheny College.
2.) Carol Cartwright killed off Kent State hockey.

Gee, I thought Kent State players HAZING new members of their own team killed KSU hockey...
I have a lot of respect for her. Trips to Kent State for gymnastics ment the opportunity to actually see her. I cannot remember a meet either at KSU or a MAC Championship where she was not in attendance. This is WAY more than I can say for our own President and AD here. Not that I think they are doing a terrible job because I don't but out of a 4 meet home schedule is it that much to as to see both of them at least once a season?

The Plain Dealer styles itself as a statewide paper. It can't give Bowling Green the attention we all think we deserve.JohnnySwoop '85 wrote:1.) Typical NE Ohio journalism coverage of BG.
They do okay by us. I think most of us would like to see more MAC converage in the Plain Dealer, but in the context of the MAC coverage they presently do, Bowling Green gets a fair shake.

I tend to agree with that. The Beacon Journal just plain sux when it comes to MAC coverage. JW85 is absolutely correct. ONE paragraph and no box score. Unless BG is playing Kent or Akron, forget it. Even then it sux. They cover Ohio State waaaaaaaaaaaay too much.1987alum wrote:What he said.Schadenfreude wrote:The Plain Dealer styles itself as a statewide paper. Ok, after some time to reflect, I guess the real problem I have with this article is the headline. After Omar's story last week I really shouldn't complain about the PDs coverage (and I should note that my wife and I work for a sister paper of the PD).
The PD provides coverage commensurate with fan base but not program strength in my opinion. OSU probably gets 75 times the coverage as us but are they 75 times the program?
Amongst my closest friends I am the only BG/MAC supporter. I go on and on about the quality of play from most teams and the overall accessibility of MAC athletics. It’s like talking to a brick wall but I’m going to keep selling it. I’m actually getting through to some of their kids better than them. All they can say is go Bucks.

That's the way most newspapers make decisions - market demand. Deciding coverage based on program strength will do nothing to help sell newspapers, I'm afraid.AZZZZ wrote:The PD provides coverage commensurate with fan base but not program strength in my opinion.
