Thanks to the Buffalo alums for putting on a nice spread. It's a great thing and a great tradition to start now that we're back in the East.

Second, everyone has down years. Buffalo has taken some time getting things going in football, but that's not the only sport the MAC competes in.

Didn't they bring hundreds of fans to the Gund last year for the hoops tourney? Aren't they successful in soccer?

Bottom line, Buffalo is one of the premier public universities in NY State. Having them in the conference is a plus from a both an academic and visibility standpoint.
Well said, LB. Buffalo is a fine school and they did bring a ton of fans to the Gund last year. Their football team just hasn't caught the break it needs yet. I'm glad to get outta there with a win the other day.

And I'd like to add my thanks to the Buffalo Chapter as well....good times and friendly folks. Thanks Rich!

GO FALCONS!

Well I can respect your opinions. I do understand that being associated with the MAC does not revolve around football performance. However please make a better argument than for their basketball team being in the MAC finals one year. I love BG and I love the MAC, but let's face it, that carries zero weight. Look at the number of D-1A basketball schools around the country. Almost anyone can throw together a decent basketball team at any given time. Soccer????? I'm pretty sure in our history that BG has had several topped ranked soccer teams, however I don't ever recall having it thrust BG or the MAC into any national spotlight.

A couple of down years, I understand. I stopped at 2002, would you like me to go back farther?

I went to BG prior to them being in the conference, we seemed to do pretty well then?

I'm just saying, football only, they bring our conference down!

Falcon52:

There's no denying that Buffalo's football team has had a lot of trouble. They probably made the jump from I-AA too soon. But remember that the university presidents make the decisions about who is and is not invited into the conference and, as UK points out, Buffalo stacks up well in an area that the presidents seem most concerned with - academics.

The fact that the school has had some success in other sports does not absolve them of failing on the gridiron, but it cannot be overlooked, either.

A coaching change is likely for the football team at year's end and, given the defensive improvement and the early promise of a new QB this season, there may be signs of life yet.

Academics are always getting in the way of football!

Why did Temple leave their conference? Did they have a decline in academics?

Did Miami, Boston College, and Va Tech leave because their academics were better than Georgetown, UCONN and the other Big East schools.

Maybe we can just release them from football like Georgetown in the Big East. Ha!

If I find out that Buffalo is a crappy school and they let just about anyone in that applies, I'm going to be upset with you guys. For now I will take your word fot it.

They can stay.

Unless somebody from "Upstate" corrects me, from what I remember growing up there...U of B wasn't anything special including academically. I guess you could say that since they admitted my sister..well then they'll let just about....

Seems like the real brain drain schools would be in the form of Ithaca, Univ of Rochester, and Cornell...which weren't for me, my primary criteria were A.) Must have a football team B.) must have a hockey team c.) tuition must be less than the Gross National Product....tada...BGSU (including out of state fees).

That's the upstate perception.

But I think part of what feeds that is the negative impression New Yorkers have with public universities in general. It never failed to astound me how native New Yorkers (including upstaters) would choose a mediocre private school over a decent public school, just to be able to say they got a private school education.

SUNY Buffalo is a good university. I don't know how selective they are, but they they have a law school, a med school and all the other graduate programs mentioned here (which makes SUNY Buffalo more of a Big Ten-style school than any other MAC school).

Also, SUNY Buffalo made the U.S. News best national universities list -- ranking in the neighborhood of Ohio U., Oklahoma, Oregon, Kentucky, South Carolina or Utah. (Binghamton and Stony Brook rate a bit higher).

That puts 'em higher than Bowling Green, which is the next tier down.
