Following next year's recruits...

Post by BGFan »

This will be similar to the various threads in the football forum although I don't see a need to start a new thread for each recruit.

We currently have 5 recruits lined up for next year, one of which has already signed a letter of intent to play at BG and is also currently on the IR list for his team and one of which is currently sitting out this year due to transferring from Maine.

What I will try to do as time allows is update this thread periodically with their progress throughout the year. This, to me, will give us an idea of what we have to look forward to next year as we enjoy our continued improvement this year.

The current reruits are as follows:

Todd McIlrath - forward
Jacob Cepis - forward
James Perkin - forward
Tim Maxwell - defense
Phil Greer - Goalie

Todd McIlrath - Is currently with the Indiana Ice and is on the injured reserve list. He was scheduled to play with BG this year but his knee had not completely healed and it was hampering his play so he was asked to remain with Indiana for another year until his knee was sufficiently heeled, which he agreed to do. Unfortunately he also seperated his shoulder during practice so his time on the IR list is indefinate. It looks like it may be January or February before he sees any ice time.

A couple of interesting facts: He was leading the USHL last year in scoring when he injured his knee so we know that he can score. From what I understand a major juniors team (semi-pro) was interested in him this year but he turned them down because he had committed to BG and is eager to play here. He'll bide his time in Indiana and play for BG next year.

Tim Maxwell- Is currently enrolled at BG and will play next season. He is transferring here from Maine and must sit out a year. He won't lose any years of eligibility so he will be playing here for 3 years.

Paluch was recruiting Maxwell his first year here. Had he convinced him then to come here he would currently be a junior. Maine won the recruiting battle and then asked Tim to stay in juniors one more year, which he did. Last year he only got to play in, I believe, 11 games in which he scored 7 points. He's not sure why he had such limited playing time other than the fact that Maine is currently overloaded with defensemen. He became discouraged at Maine and asked to transfer here. We met him the other day at the scrimmage. He seems to be a great guy and loves BG. The coaches are very excited to have him here.

In subsequent posts, I won't be mentioning the above players much since neither is playing right now. When McIlrath comes off of the IR list I'll note that and record his stats when the time comes.

I don't know quite as much about the other recruits so I'll limit their information to their stats and, maybe, links to articles if I find them.

Jacob Cepis - Transferred from the Cleveland Jr. Barons in the NAHL last year to the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders in the USHL this year. The USHL is generally considered a tougher league than the NAHL so this is a good move for Jacob.

Current Stats: 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points in 5 games. Currently tied for the lead in total points on the team.

James Perkin - Plays for the Lincoln Stars in the USHL.

Current Stats: 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points in 4 games. Second in scoring on the team. (Interesting note: Talking to the coaches last night, James got off to a slow start this year. He had NO points in his first 3 games. All 5 of his points came in his fourth game.)

Phil Greer - In 6 games he has a 4.82 gaa and a .867 save percentage.

Update:

Jacob Cepis: 4 goals and 4 assists in 6 games. He's currently second on the team in scoring (only 1 point behind the leader). It seems he's made the jump to the USHL with no problem. His team is in first place in their division.

James Perkin: 2 goals and 3 assists in 6 games. He's failed to score in all but his fourth game. Slow start to the season....let's hope he finds his stride soon.

Phil Greer's stats remain unchanged. His team seems to have signed a new goalie and Greer hasn't played since. (He's a recruited walk on for BG next year and will likely be our third goalie.)

I'm pretty sure I saw Maxwell at the scrimmage? Is he here now, and just sitting out the season or what?

Read the first post in this thread. It explains Maxwell's status. By NCAA regulations he's required to sit out a year after transferring. He'll still have 3 years of eligibility, however.

I'll see what "inside" information I can get throughout the year on Cepis considering I used to work for the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders. . .

Right, I understand that. I guess I worded my question poorly. This was the same Maxwell we saw at the scrimmage right?

Yes it was the same Maxwell. Tim seems like a really good kid, who is SOOOO happy to be here!!

Sorry....I misunderstood also, I guess. And, as FF stated, he's here and attending classes. He does seem like a great kid and the coaches are really happy to have him here. They just wish, with Jonathon Sigalet leaving, that he could be playing right now. They believe that he's that good and that he could step in and replace Siggy with out a problem.

Jacob Cepis - through 11 games, is currently fourth on the team in scoring with 4 goals and 5 assists for 9 points. The team has dropped to second place and Cepis seems to be struggling a little bit dropping from second to fourth in scoring. Hopefully this is just a minor set back and he'll be back on track soon.

James Perkin - Through 12 games has dropped to sixth place in scoring with 2 goals and 4 assists for 6 points. His team is currently in last place in their division so it's not just him that's struggling but he's only had one assist to his credit since the sixth game.

Todd McIlrath is still on IR for Indiana.

Phil Greer (non-scholarship) - His stats have improved a bit. So far he's played in 8 games and is currently carrying a 4.27 gaa and a .876 save percentage.

Tim Maxwell not only played in the scrimmage, but he scored one of the only goals. He should be a nice addition to the D-core next season.
I just hope McIlrath can stay healthy he has had knee problems the last two seasons now....but if he is healthy he should be like another Svendson out there for us. He's not a big guy, but hes quick, scrappy and can score the puck. Cepis is the same way.
Also there is chance we could get Trevor Lewis, who has narrowed his choices down to BG and like three other schools. He'd be another big-time recruit and big scorer up front.

Josh Unice is now showing up on the recruiting page as a commit for 2007. He's currently a goalie on the US National Development Program Under 17 team.

Jacob Cepis - through 16 games, is still fourth on the team in scoring with 6 goals and 6 assists for 12 points. The team moved back up to first place in their division. Although Cepis has dropped off a bit on scoring I like the fact that he's scoring evenly both ways.

James Perkin - Through 17 games has moved back up to fourth place in scoring with 5 goals and 4 assists for 9 points. His team has moved up to in fourth place (out of 5) in their division. It looks like his goal scoring has picked up a bit.

Todd McIlrath is still on IR for Indiana.

Phil Greer (non-scholarship) - His stats are unchanged.

Josh Unice - I haven't been able to find specific stats for him yet. Still looking

It's been a while since I've updated this:

Cepis seems to be struggling a bit. He's currently 7th on the team in scoring through 31 games. He has 8 goals and 6 assists for 14 points.

On the other hand Perkin seems to have picked his game up! He's 4th on the team in scoring with 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points.

McIlrath is off of the IR list and is now playing! Through 4 games he has 1 goal and 1 assist. It may take a few games for him to get back into form.

Greer's game has improved also. He's played in 14 games and has a 4.41 gaa, and a .882 save percentage.

It's difficult to grade Bailen, an '08 recruit, since he's a defenseman. He does, however, have 5 assists in 26 games and is ranked on Heisenberg's site as the top recruit for 2008.

Unice, an '07 recruit on the USDPT U-17 team currently has a repectable 3.30 gaa and a .902 save percentage. These guys play teams from countries all over the world so it's hard to say what his stats would be state side.
