McMetz811...now just Metz

Post by Metz »

I've been meaning to get to this for awhile but just never had time...

My name is Mike Metzger (like the dirt bike rider, hence the screen name!) and am currently a senior at BGSU. I will still be here for another year and a half and the BG spirit will continue in me long after that! I'm originally from Northwood, OH which is in the North part of Wood County. Go figure! Most people consider it a suburb of turdledo but since they are in a different county, I will protest that any day!

My childhood life was pretty boring. Besides going to school and extracurricular activities, I didn't have much time for anything. So to save you time on reading, I'm just going to skip it and go right to the BG stuff!

Back while I was in 8th grade, my brother started to attend BG. Before this time I was a huge Michigan fan since my high school colors were blue and yellow as well. Once my dad (Ornithologist on this site) started taking me to sporting events in BG, my favorite school shifted within a few games. I made every football game and basketball game I could and attended hockey events when my brother was playing in Athletic band. After 5 years of watching my bro go through school, it was my turn to find the college I was going to attend.

My orginal idea was to major in Computer Engineering. After I found out I could do that at TU or Akron, I was very upset. My dad being a TU graduate guided me in the right direction...away from that crappy TU place (Akron was just too far)! After taking a web design class in high school, I thought that might be something I wanted to do. My guidance counselor told me about this program at BGSU called VCT and the more I looked into it, the more I realized it was for me.

My road to BG was rather easy with the proper guidance and now that I am here I could not be happier! Every year my spirit for BG grows more and more. Being in the Falcon Marching Band and also working at the BG News has led me to attend many sporting events. I have now found myself enjoying sports like tennis and swimming even while doing the whole photography thing. I never once had an interest in any of the minor sports at BG, but the more I go to them, the more exciting they get! I would now consider myself one of the biggest (literally) and most spirited BG fans there is. Besides just sports, I enjoy the university as a whole. The campus is very unique and the people are awesome!

Next behind BG still sits my Maize and Blue. I feel the passion to hate the chocolate covered peanut butter balls from central Ohio. For pro sports, the Cubs are my favorite for baseball, Blackhawks for hockey, and the Browns for football. My favorite basketball team used to be the Chicago Bulls but they failed me many times over with the breaking up of a dynasty. With Scottie Pippen now retiring, they are officially over. BG basketball is where my true passion lies so picking a pro team is rather easy. Wherever Antonio Daniels is playing, I am cheering them on!

I don't really know what else to say so I guess I'll quit after some closing thoughts. This site rocks and it's great to see so many others with the same passion for BG Athletics and the band that I have. Grant, I thank you a ton for getting this site going! It is truly amazing how far it has come. I know I have not met a lot of you but I am sure I will in time. If you ever see a larger guy with the #11 and Metzger on the back of his orange jersey, it's either me or someone kicked my a$$ and stole it! So if it's me, come talk to me. If it's someone else, beat them up and get my jersey back for me! Until we meet, may your Falcon wings let you soar wherever you want to go!

I've done this before but suppose I should update it with the new format and all. Since McMetz is obviously one of the younger members of the Ziggy board and I'm probably the oldest (70), here goes:

I came to BG in the fall of 1952 with the express purpose of being on the swim team (they had mens' swimming then). I enjoyed swimming for Sam Cooper on some very good teams. In fact, the 1956 team won BG's first MAC championship in any sport. The team was unbeaten, by the way.

I've followed BG sports seriously since graduation in 1956. Have missed very few BG-WMU football and basketball games at WMU since Kalamazoo is only 60 miles from my home, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Since my retirement 10 years ago I have become extremely active in following the Falcons. A lot of my current zeal was formulated a couple of years ago when I met Falcon Freak90 on the Internet. Boy, things were tough football-wise then and the first football game my son and I attended at BG with Freak was a real disaster. It was a loss to OU but it was more than a loss. Attendance was an announced 6000 but I doubt that many were there. The worst part was that there were more OU fans in the parking lot than BG's. The OU fans justifiably insulted us.

Well, things have certainly changed for the best. Also, the Ziggy group is the greatest bunch of BG's I've ever been around. Meeting Freak,, Hammb Denny and Hartmom (just to mention a few) has been a wonderful experience. Will see some of you Saturday at CMU.

I found the fact that he posted his bio below your bio to be quite endearing. Maybe he figured this would be the way to maximize people reading his by riding on someone elses coat-tails.

Heck, maybe I should post my bio here to, so more people read it?

Along with having the most recent post in every forum...

I am starting to agree with John, you need to find a job.
