Tonights game was fun to listen to and made working tonight much more enjoyable. Horell, seemed to play great. I don't listen/watch/follow much hockey, but it seemed like the buckeyes had a lot of powerplays, which to me makes Horrell's playing even better. The team seemed to do a much better job stopping the powerplays tonight as well. The tie is good, and since it was on their ice, I think it gives the team some ability that they should be able to play and beat just about anyone at home.

I didn't go to too many hockey games when I was at BG and I don't really have a very good understanding of the game, but my wife and I drove across town to watch the Falcons this evening. It was a pretty exciting game. You couldn't tell from their crowd -- seemed like most of them showed up for a funeral. Horrell was outstanding all night. I missed the first 2 goals (1 OSU, 1 BG) because I was waiting in line for tickets, which was a mess. I thought we were going to pull it out in regulation after the Suckeye got a 5-minute game misconduct penalty, but we followed it up a minute later with the same penalty. All in all, I had a great time at the game and hopefully I can make it to a couple basketball/hockey doubleheaders this winter.

You'll find the Value City Arena is a crappy place to watch a hockey game. The crowd is usually dead and more interested in the next big stock then whether a team is capable of pulling a one-timer.

However, I'm thrilled to hear that a good deal of Orange was seen tonight. With every bain of my existence do I hate the Suckeyes, and a tie is huge at that hell hole they call the Schott.

Just remember, the game was played in Value City Arena. I've watched a game from the press box before while trying to do stats for the team. It is VERY hard to tell what's going on on the ice from up there. And home teams tend to pad the stats every once in awhile so it looks like they are generating a ton of offense.

Very true. Any puck that rolled towards Horrell was counted as a shot, which can be expected. They did significantly outshoot us, but maybe not as bad as reported. Luckily the home-team can't pad the numbers that really matter though.

However, you do have to watch out for those "Michigan State last-seconds"

I worked for the team from the 94-95 season until the 2000-01 seaon. The last season and a half I was helping with the stats the team keeps (faceoffs, hits, etc). The rest of the time I was helping the equipment manager (Don Woods then Scott Jess). If I remember correctly, the game I was at was during the 2000-2001 season.

From what I understand, any puck that the goalie has to stop to keep if out of the net is considered a shot. So, yes, the stats were padded. I saw the shots roll up for OSU every time Horrell touched the puck but that wasn't the case for the OSU goalie.

Don't get me wrong, there was a definate shot differential, but not nearly as bad as was reported. In general, BG does a much better job of counting the shots then any where else I've seen a game.

My overall view of the game, having been there, is that we sacrificed a bit of offense so that we could get back on D better. This was verified in the article I read stating that we backed the center up a bit in the offensive zone so that he could get back on D quicker and limit the odd man rushes. This helped a great deal and it should be noted that a very large portion of OSU's shots were from the perimeter with very few rebound shots being given up. The other thing I noticed was the defense NOT pinching in as much as the previous games and moving back on D instead of trying to keep the puck in the offensive zone. Again, this sacrificed some offensive opportunities but allowed us to get back on D which you need to do against a fast team. (I look for this to be reversed against Ferris.)

Horrell had a hell of a game but it was played MUCH different from the Saturday night game, stressing defense over offense. Once Spratt settles down I'm sure he'll be fine, but Horrell may have won himself the starting nod for now.

BGFan is correct on how shots are counted. I don't believe OSU people would be padding the shot count against us as that only makes our goalie's stats look better (i.e. save percentage) and does nothing for them.
On the post-game show Fogarty was noncommittal on whether Horrell will now be the starter and echoed BGFan again in that the team defense was much better than the night before. It IS a team game. Just my take. :) Time 2 go.
