How big is Saturday's game?

Post by Schadenfreude »

If Akron wins, Bowling Green would need help to win the East.

Akron's path to an East title is pretty simple:

1. Win the games that are left: Bowling Green, Ohio, Ball State and Kent State.

2. Hope for a Miami loss.

In other words, if Akron wins Saturday, the Miami game probably won't matter for us.

If Bowling Green goes on to beat Miami, Akron would win the division based on the head-to-head tiebreaker, unless they stumble again.

No need to drink the Kool-Aid just yet.

It was only one loss. ONE loss.

Schade's post didn't smack of despair, IMO, it just points out that we can't just target the Miami game as the only "must win" for the remainder of the year. The Akron game is quite large.

Akron. Big. Must Win.
Kent. Big. Must Win.
Miami. Big. Must Win.
Toledo. Big. Must Win.

Ok, that last one in just for fun. First three are must win 'cause we can't count on anyone else helping us out.

Getting tired of hearing 'it's just one loss'. If ever a loss counted for more then just one loss in the standings, it was this one. We lost physically and emotionally as well. Those things carry over from game to game. We'll see against Akron just how much else we lost against Western.

We're about to find out what our team, and program, are made of this week.

EAST MAC Overall
Bowling Green 3-1 (Conference) 4-3 (Overall)
Miami 3-2 4-3
Akron 2-2 3-4
Ohio 2-2 3-4
Kent State 0-4 1-6
Buffalo 0-4 0-7

We need to take every game one game at a time. For those who were looking forward to Toledo and other games, you just can't do that.

But it is just ONE loss. Let's take care of Akron this weekend.

FWIW.

D-Line & some seniors took AT out to dinner after films yesterday. D-line owed him dinner.

Go Falcons. What the Hell is a ZIP?

I don't wanna curse either of us, but I think Akron is incapable of winning the East. But that's just me. It will be the Red or the Orange coming out of the East to face UT in December. (yes, I'm already counting out OU)

That's the funny thing, with BG's loss, BG, Miami, Akron and Ohio are all in the running. Everyone, including myself, is talking about BG and Miami, but Akron and Ohio are lurking right there in the shadows. I still think the winner of the BG/Miami game will be the East Champion, but every game counts as we learned against WMU.

FWIW, the O-line as well as the D-line shoulda took AT to dinner , cuz they owed him after that rather weak pass blocking performance last sat. I'm tellin ya, the o-line has got to get it in gear in both phases of their game. A solid blocking o-line can mask a young qb's nervous in a game when he's got time and doesnt' have to jumb around in the pocket like a a chicken with his head cut off to find receivers. This is what helped Omar last year end the game vs Ok with 220yards passing and no interceptions and no sacks vs a very good B12 d-line.

Aside from statistical positioning, this might be one of the biggest games in the history of the program. Omar or not, this will determine if what happened Saturday was a fluke (my opinion) or the future M.O. of this team under the preset coaching staff.

Do we shake it off and come out guns blazing with an explosive offense and a fast, suffocating defense that has overwhelmed virtually every regular season home opponent the last four years

OR.....

Will the passing game be riddled with drops, missed reads, horizontal passes and stuffed runs while the defense and special teams give up big play after big play all day long?

Like BGSU33 said, this has Fat Punter '94 potential. The players and coaches must come together, fix the mistakes and pound a vulnerable Akron team to show the rest of the conference, and themselves, that Western was a anomoly. WMU had a different and inexplicable profile from the other losses given their status as a lower level divisional team playing on the road.

Bob Knight always says "You have to get in position to get in a position." The Akron game will tell the story of the rest of the year and perhaps the rest of Gregg Brandon's tenure. You don't win two straight bowl games without knowing how to coach, and history indicates the ship will be righted.

Just win baby! - Al Davis

Maybe an unexpected gift from the gridiron gods will come in the form of Buffalo.

They play @ Miami the same time we're at Kent...so there's something to watch and listen to. Anyone notice that they were only behind Toledo by 5 at the half?
Maybe they can go the distance one of these weekends and get there 1st win...let it be Nov 5th.
