Long-Snapper
Long-Snapper
Um yeah I think we need a new one.
The long snapper is one of the reasons we've had so many problems with punts, extra points, and field goals this year. He isn't accurate, and hidsnaps are extremely slow. I'm not a fan of the punt scheme, but I'd be willing to bet that it wouldn't nearly as ugly if Gavin Powell was still around to snap.
The snap that Culp shot past Turner came back a lot quicker than anything we've seen from the long snapper.

Did I say the entire problem with the kicking game is with the long snapper? I don't think I did. It's also obviously not the entire problem with the placekicking. But if you've watched Cutler's snaps on punts and PAT's/FG's, it's obviously a part of the problem. Cutler walked on as a linebacker and has gotten the job by default because we didn't address the need in recruiting.

Yeah I say let's recruit a long snapper. While we're at it, let's find us a kicker, a punter, and some athletes who are willing to fly around on special teams and hit somebody. And here's an amazing idea, let's actually hire someone to coach them and not pass the job off to a position coach who obviously can't or won't do it.
Nah, why would we do that? This team is so good we'll just go for it on every fourth down and extra points won't matter because we'll win every game by 50. Special teams don't really influence the outcome of a game.

I agree with most of postings here, but let's try something as fans, root and encourage those players we have. Yes, we may need to some recruiting, but we only have what we have now.
I believe the guys we have can do it if coached properly. That may be the biggest IF of them all. I believe Brandon is a good assistant coach, but is not the Head coach he is given credit for.

If you don't recruit a long snapper, where do you think you'll find one? Just hope that somebody shows up that can snap? You're probably not going to use a scholarship (although Urban in his first year brought in Joe Gutierrez on a scholarshp just to long snap), but you damn well better look at somebody who can snap when you're recruiting walk-ons.Warthog wrote:So now we are supposed to recruit a long snapper? Comparing this to the Browns drafting Pontbriand (sp) isn't valid. That was one of 7 draft choices, not one of 85 scholarships. Given Butch Davis' track record when it came to his draft picks, Pontbriand was nowhere near his worst pick even though it was a waste of a draft choice.
I don't think you can blame the special teams problems on the long snapper, center, kicker or punter, it is a little bit of all of them. The bottom line is that we need to either hire a special teams coach or assign one of the coaches to spend extra time with our special teams. I really hope that we recruit a good long snapper, kicker and punter so that our special teams don't stink up the joint again next season.
