What makes a "True" fan
What makes a "True" fan
There certainly is a lot of bashing of fellow BG fans on this site (as there are on many sites). There is always some desire (maybe it's human nature) to make your fellow fans feel inferior and yourself important and all knowing. I dunno know.
Personally, A BG fan ranges from anyone who tries to listen to the game when they can to someone who tries to make it to a game or two each year to someone who goes to every home game to someone who has season tickets to someone who follows the team to all home games and all away games.
I have been to my fair share of games over the years, good and bad weather, good and bad teams. I have stayed for the entire game and left earlier..... I have stayed well past the game's ending. Each time there are different reasons.
At last years homecoming game, in the rain/sleet/snow and cold, I looked at my two kids and my wife and knew they weren't having a good time and BG was pounding the crap out of Ball State. We left. I knew there would be other games, but the well-being of my family ruled over my desire to watch the whole game, we finally left. We were dressed as best as possible, but when your wet, it is not fun for an 11 year old. We went into town to have dinner before the 2 1/2 hour ride home.
If you want to call me a fair weather fan...... go ahead.
I was at my son's soccer game last week and one of the father's said he only watches two college teams play on TV - Ohio State and Notre Dame..... Then he proceeded to say he played college ball for Ohio....... I was stunned.
So tell me......... Who's more of a fan, the guy who came out to try and weather the storm as best he could or the guy who took a free education and then dashed..............

I believe that's the ultimate point to Tech's post.BleedOrange wrote:I find these discussions on being a "True Fan" unfailingly silly and pointless.
I don't get into how good a fan is because of this, that, or the other reasons. We are all fans of BGSU and we do NOT eat our own.
Unfortunately, many of the youths on this site don't 'get that' yet.

Many of the YOUTHS? From what I've seen, the youths are accepting this better than some of you alumni. The "youths" aren't the ones calling each other bad fans, the "youths" aren't the ones who are making these threads about bad fans, etc. It seems to me that sometimes the "youth" of this site are more mature than the alumni. It's like this after every game here (good or bad), after every bad thing, etc. And it gets old real quick. Go ahead, call me an immature youth or whatever, but at least I'm not calling out other peoples loyalty and trying to define what a "true fan" is, when in fact, the definition varies for each and every person on this site. Its not just one person either, its the majority of the members that do this, there are exceptions of course, but the negative attitudes always outweigh the good ones. I'm sick of it, and so I bid thee farewell. When you guys wanna stop dumping on each other for not being as "good as a fan" as you want them to be, and accept the fact that they are a fan, maybe I'll be back.

Yeah, you're right. I glanced at Tech's post, rolled my eyes, and posted b4 giving it a fair read. My bad. I'm glad Tech made his point. As a BGSU alumni, having these moronic "true fan" debates appear on our sports boards is embarrassing.

*'Youths' is a realtive term. I can be a 'youth' compared to some on this board.
*'Youths' is not synonymous with "undergraduate".
*You are the exception, momtartin, not the rule. I directly quoted you in another thread regarding the treatment of fellow fans. I wish there were more with your attitude. I apologize if you took my very blanket post as a personal afront.

Thanks RUIT, That pretty much sums it up. Who cares what the definition is...... Personally, I didn't make yesterday's game because........ I had a hot date .........Rightupinthere wrote:I believe that's the ultimate point to Tech's post.BleedOrange wrote:I find these discussions on being a "True Fan" unfailingly silly and pointless.

Second, I also think I stink at making Polls
And Third...GO BG!!!!! There is lots of football left and I am going to add my mojo on game day by wearing my BG apparel, listening to the game in my studio/office, and posting postive thoughts at AZZ,com.

That's a good post there....truebgfootballfan wrote:A true fan is someone who ALWAYS roots for his or her team, but is honest enough to know and admit how good their team really is.
I am guilty of wearing orange glasses most of the time because I care so very much about our teams and University. Sometimes I don't want to believe our team has flaws and shortcomings but it does.
I started buying season tickets in 1996 during the very lean last years of Gary Blackney....when 7,000 folks would show up at games. I'll take these years ANY day over that.
I will always root for only one school....always, no matter what happens on the field.

Losing sleep for endless nights after a tough loss as it eats away at you all week long, having a great rest of the week after a big win, watching or listening to every game you can either in person or on TV, making every roadtrip you can, having trouble spending money on excess things unless it means for tickets, gas and tailgate items, decorating your house or car in your school colors, talking about your school and team to everyone whether they care or not, buying season tickets, donating money to the program, knowing the conference standings off the top of your head, knowing what references such as "fat punter" mean without having to ask, bleeding orange instead of red, searching everday for information about your school on the internet, having people thinking you are weird because of how much you care about your teams, asking yourself if maybe you are weird because of how much you care about your teams, wanting like hell to have every Saturday in the fall open.....yeah, that about sums it up.
GO BG!!!

Would you go into the Hockey Forum and post that there. Excellent point, this is something the hockey fanatics over there need to learn.truebgfootballfan wrote:A true fan is someone who ALWAYS roots for his or her team, but is honest enough to know and admit how good their team really is.
