The Offensive Line......................
Now I can almost hear your posts now about I know nothing, but listen. The O-line has not been the same since last year. Omar had the luxury of no sacks and only a few hurries vs one of the best defenses in football in Oklahoma at the time. This year Omar has been getting hurried multiple times every possesion and getting sacked a ton vs weak Mac teams, yet our o-line is supposedly more athletic than in years past. Whats wrong here. We should be solid on Omar's blind side with Warren , Lichtensteiger at LT & LG. Why are we having problems protecting Omar and/or Turner vs these weak teams? It makes no sense. It can't be all Omar is waiting too long , though that can be a small part.
Our offense is based on a O-line being staunch against pass rushes to give the qb time to make decent reads. That hasn't been happening much this year at all. I have a funny feeling our o-line is worse than last year.

Our O line last year was dominant in both run blocking and pass blocking. The line was the #1 reason our offense was so good last season.falconboy wrote:I have a funny feeling our o-line is worse than last year.

Omar had PJ on the underneath route on the play he got hurt. He held onto it and got hurt because of it.San Diego Falcon wrote:I haven't seen the last few games, but Omar hasn't has Magner and Pope this year to dump the ball of to whenever he faced pressure.
As far as the O-line, I don't think they've been very good on run blocking, but pass blocking has been okay. Turner got sacked and flushed out of the pocket quite a few times yesterday, but I think that had more to do with his inexperience than poor pass protection.

One of the reasons Omar gets sacked so infrequently is that he has a great clock in his head. You don't see him holding the ball too long. he either makes a throw to a reciever or he chucks it out of bounds. AT held the ball and had the happy feet a bit yesterday, but as he gets accustomed to the speed of college football, he'll get better with that.
It's been said that the jump from HS to college football is the biggest a player makes...bigger even than going from college to the NFL.

Okay..nice points but why in the heck did we make Western's freshman qb look like Joe Montana out there last Sat. with absolutly no pressure on him at all? I still think the pass blocking has not been as good as last year considering the sacks we're giving up against the likes of Buffalo, Ball St. and Western Michigan who are all in the bottom 10 or 15 of Div.1A teams.Flipper wrote:One of the reasons Omar gets sacked so infrequently is that he has a great clock in his head. The o-line has to play better for us to have a chance.

I'm not sure that I see the connection between the performance of our dline and the performance of our oline....
Also consider the following
1) Mrzurorwi....Mzorrur...Scott graduated and left a hole at center
2) Our top RB and main "check down" guy (PJ Pope) has been hurt and
Magner and Hawk graduated. Hawk and Magner were our best "possession WR's and the only guy that seems capable of carrying that load now (partridge) is a hurting turtle.
3) teams have decided that sitting back in coverage against Omar is a death sentence, so they've decided to come after him. Omar does have a problem reacting to the blitz

The inability to put pressure on the quarterback from the defensive line has been a problem for some time. It does seem to be worse this year. I think a good part of this is that our linemen are undersized and once the blocker makes contact they are able to disengage. Anytime a defense has to get pressure by blitzing linebackers or defensive backs it opens them up to big plays. I know we had some key losses from last year, guys that started for 3 and 4 years, but I assumed there were people ready to step in. I really think the kicking game has been a disaster and has put undue pressure on both defenses and the offenses.
When PJ Pope is healthy, he is a great runner and receiver, but he is an outstanding blocker as well. He very rarely misses a block and is superior to BJ Lane in that area. Having a RB that picks up the blitzer gives the QB that extra split second that can be the difference between a big play for the offense and a sack for the defense. I think Omar is having more trouble with the blitzes simply because PJ isn't back there to block.Flipper wrote:3) teams have decided that sitting back in coverage against Omar is a death sentence, so they've decided to come after him. Kdog,
I couldn't have said it better myself. We are seeing now just how good our O-line was at protecting Omar and giving him plenty of time to throw the ball. Hopefully we have learned from Saturday and protect Turner more so that he doesn't have to hurry and get rid of the ball and throw passes that are either too high or too low.

Last season the offensive line was greatly underappreciated. It was no coincidence that Omar was sacked about one time for every 50 throws. Offensive lines are often overlooked and I can see why but you can only be as good as your offensive line.BGSU96 wrote:"Our O line last year was dominant in both run blocking and pass blocking. Re: The Offensive Line......................
I do believe one needs to consider all phases of the offensive schemes when making graod statements regarding the overall performance of the offensive line...I would ask you to consider the following:falconboy wrote:Now I can almost hear your posts now about I know nothing, but listen. Field position and the plays called relative to overall game characteristics. Certainly the lack of BG's solid defensive play contributes greatly to the amount of pressure brought by the opposing defense. Knowing that most any team may score at will against the BG defense enables them to gamble with interior pressure, blitzes, and aggressive secondary play!
Also contributing to the increased pressure "brought" by opposing defenses is the total lack of any punting game. It is a sorry state when one of the nations finest punters is continually subjected to unbeleiveable pressure prior to receiving the snap. As for the deep snapper, I believe he is a fine young man and is doing the best possible job. However, his performance is not up to D-I quality. Take a look next time...far too long from between the time the ball is snapped to the time it meets the foot!
So you see...there are so very many factors thast play into the overall performance of the BG Team...
filling the stadium would be Great as well. I find it absolutely appaulling for BG students to sit in their dorm rooms and watch Ohio State or others while the BG team is battling hard on the grid iron a block or two away!!!
Oh well, thanks for your consideration...I am proud to be associated with BG, Coach Brandon & his staff, and all the students & faculty...
There is power in numbers...and remember winning in life is a Team...
