My gut reaction to this......

Is I don't think AT is anywhere as good as Omar, at least in the passing game. But we will see this Sat how good Turner is.

Yes...approaching Saturday's game with the mindset that a redshirt freshman QB's career will be judged on the basis of his first start seems like a prudent course of action.

Should we base it upon how awful he does at the spring game?

If we were judging first start performances by freshmen than Josh Harris would have led us believe he would be a great tailback for us after his 100 yard plus rushing game versus Ohio U when he started at tailback.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Harris' 100-yard game was against Miami. His first start at QB was against UT in Blackney's last game. Got smoked 51-7 or something like that.

So. VERY. CCOOOOOOOOLLLLLLDDDD.

That UT game had to be the coldest, and worst, game I've ever sat through completely. Our points came at the end in garbage time as well. I remember yelling to my UT friends that there was plenty more where that came from :)

You're good, man. Harris rushed for 103 yards at Miami in 2000. He did ok vs UT in his first career start but BG was clearly overmatched in that game. 51-17, ESPN2, COLD AS ICE IN SIBERIA....and then some.

AT comes across as being really athletic. The guy has a fantastic arm, and in particular, he can run. I just hope that he will take advantage of his running skills in a more consistent way Sat. and run for those 1st downs when he's got the opportunity. Too often our QBs sit back looking for the open receiver when they could just as easily make the first down themselves. ------ Tressel at OSU would take exception of my comments as he has been overheard many times telling his QBs not to run. Maybe that's why they've had such a boring offense over the years. ----- I also hope our guys can bring some razzle-dazzles to the table. We have yet to do anything unpredictable save for that kick-off return trick that back-fired.

Didn't Fry fake a punt to get a first down at Wisconsin?

Give that woman a prize!

If memory serves, we've done an end-around and/or a reverse on offense. We also lined Omar outwide with AT at QB against Boise.

Advantage of having AT in the game instead of Omar...
Thinking back to the Josh Harris era, some of the so called "trick plays" can be run. Funny how when BG does the toss back to the QB that dives over players into the end zone that's considered a trick play, but when the big schools run the same play, it's just plain brilliant. Call it what you want, but I'd love to see some of those plays again.

Don't get me wrong, Omar is simply the best and with his arm/acuracy, no need to run those plays. I am just hoping O sits out and heels for final 2 games. We need him back healthy for those match ups.

Go BG!!!

I believe what was said about AT not being as good a passer as Omar right on. i dont mean this badly for AT, but instead see Omar as someone who is without a doubt one of the best, if not the best passer ever in college football. I see him as that good.
I agree with GB that from what I have seen AT is more like josh, and that there is nothing to be worried about. AT has game and can bring it, he just brings it his way, and his way is developing, and will be tested this saturday. I am excited about being able to see what the future holds, after AT has had a week to prep.

I posted this in the pain tolerance thread:
hammb wrote:Agreed, but I think this offense was designed to work with a mobile QB.

Look at UF this year. Leak is not a good runner, and they're having a mediocre offensive year. At Utah Alex Smith was a good runner and he played his way to top pick status.

I really think that this offense, as originally drawn up by Urban/Brandon, runs best when the QB is a legitimate rushing threat. No offense to Omar, because he's a great passer, but he is not the prototype QB for this offensive scheme, IMO.

I think it holds true. This offense was designed as a spread OPTION attack, at least that's how Urban always described it when he was here. It is predicated on not only the spreading the field with WRs, but also the option running. And I don't mean just straight triple option running, but a LOT of counters and fake counters that are designed for the QB or RB. Losing Pope has hurt a lot in this regard, but I do think that this offense is at its best when it has a QB who's capable (and willing) to gain yards on the ground.
