Suisham Solid So Far

Post by BGDrew »

Shaun has been solid so far in his game. He's 3/3 on XPs and made his only field goal chance of 16 yds.

16 yards!?!? that has got to be a record for shortest field goal in modern history. Given the ball would have to be considered to be on the 1 yard line (statistically), plus 7 for the hold and 10 for the end zone... I'd think 17 would probably be about as short as you could go. Hmmm...

Anyway, enough with the nits... Go Shaun!!!

Correction, the first one was 21 yd FG and he just kicked his 2nd 21 yd FG> 3/3 XP and 2/2 FG, solid start, good confidence builder.

For some reason, ESPN.com isn't counting the snap yardage.

The game doesn't involve the Patriots or USC, so it doesn't even truly exist in the eyes of ESPN.

Great day for him!

Post by San Diego Falcon »

During the halftime highlights of the Fox coverage, the first highlight they showed of the Dallas-AZ game was Suisham warming up before the game, kicking balls into the net on the sideline, with Parcells staring at him over his shoulder - Classic!

oh the front page of the cowboys site it has suisham on there with the caption "Rookie kicker Shaun Suisham says he's ready to make his NFL debut Sunday against the Cardinals."

heres the article...

Suisham Gets First Test Sunday Against Arizona

Rookie kicker Shaun Suisham says he's ready to make his NFL debut Sunday against the Cardinals.

IRVING, Texas - Shaun Suisham probably has spent more time this week clarifying the pronunciation of his last name than discussing his kicking credentials.

For the record, it's pronounced "Swee-zum."

But the Cowboys' rookie kicker has more pressing concerns leading up to his regular-season debut Sunday against Arizona (2-4) at Texas Stadium. He wants to convince his new teammates and head coach Bill Parcells that their kicking woes are over.

"I'm a rookie kicker who hasn't done anything in this league," said Suisham, who was signed Monday to replace Jose Cortez. "I've got a lot to prove, but at the same time I don't need to do all that in one game. Just go one kick at a time here and perform like I can."

The Cowboys released Cortez less than 24 hours after he missed a crucial 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of last Sunday's 13-10 loss at Seattle. The Seahawks scored twice in the final 40 seconds to pull off an implausible come-from-behind victory.

Cortez made 12-of-16 field goal attempts with Dallas but was just 3-of-6 from beyond 40 yards. Two of his misses proved costly in last-minute losses to Seattle and Washington.

After seven games, the Cowboys (4-3) have a 3-3 record in games decided by six points or less. Parcells knew he couldn't continue trotting out a shaky kicker when 85 percent of the games have been decided in the fourth quarter.

"Anyone needs to have a reliable kicker in the NFL," he said. "It's just too many games that are too close."

Now he's banking on a baby-faced 23-year-old from Wallaceburg, Ont., who has one field goal attempt on his NFL resume - a 46-yarder he made in preseason with Pittsburgh.

But Parcells sees potential in Suisham, who spent five weeks on the Cowboys' practice squad before getting released twice in the past two weeks to make room for running back Keylon Kincade and then wide receiver J.R. Tolver.

Parcells likes Suisham's ability to kick off, which is why he didn't consider keeping Cortez as a kickoff specialist. Philadelphia signed Cortez on Tuesday and could keep him strictly for kickoffs when David Akers returns from a torn hamstring.

Billy Cundiff, a three-year starter who received an injury settlement from the Cowboys at the end of training camp, is eligible to be re-signed in a couple of weeks. But Suisham could make the Cowboys' decision simple if he produces.

"We've been looking at this player for quite awhile," Parcells said. "He was here. We kind of liked what we saw."

Suisham exudes a kind of quiet confidence despite being thrown into this pressure-packed situation, as if it's no different than his college days at Bowling Green, where he earned second-team All-MAC honors his senior year and set school records for most career points (361) and field goals made (45).

His poise wasn't broken when the Steelers released him at the end of preseason, or when the Cowboys released him on two different occasions. He's already been exposed to the itinerant life of an NFL kicker.

"Luckily I had the chance to be around (veterans) Chris Gardocki and Jeff Reed in Pittsburgh in camp, and they had a lot of input for me," Suisham said. "They offered a lot of advice and just kind of told me what I could expect as a rookie kicker. Thankfully I'm getting the opportunity, which is all I could ever hope for. But I expected what I went through."

Suisham said Parcells also spoke with him privately about the early trials of some of the league's most successful kickers. After getting released on Oct. 11, he stayed in Dallas and continued to train while waiting for another phone call from the head coach.

The call came when Cortez's inconsistencies finally reached a head in Seattle.

"Unfortunately for me to get an opportunity sometimes in this league, especially with a young guy, you need something to happen," Suisham said. "Whether that be an injury or the coaches feel they need to make a change. You don't necessarily want it to happen that way, but sometimes as a young guy that's the only way I'm going to get a chance."

His chance just happens to arrive at the most critical point of the Cowboys' season. Parcells has continually labeled Sunday's game "very important" with the Cowboys currently sitting a half-game behind the rest of the NFC East and a dizzy stretch of three games in 11 days looming after next week's bye.

But Suisham will have a couple of allies in attendance Sunday. His parents, Rick and Wendy, scheduled a trip to Dallas for their 27-year wedding anniversary, which they celebrated Thursday.

"It's been nice because throughout college they didn't miss one of my games," he said.

A game-winning field goal against Arizona would make the perfect anniversary gift. Suisham doesn't want to think that far ahead, but the Cowboys' nail-biting stretch of games would suggest he might get the chance.

I learned something new I always thought it was pronounced (sweesh-um) maybe the Dallas radio announcers were saying it right the whole time. I thought they were just saying his name in their Texas twang.
